So I have an 05 RL and I believe the transmission is slipping in all gears. I'm getting terrible gas mileage in the city (11-12), but decent on the highway (25). I can get the RPM's up higher than they should be by giving it a sudden burst of gas while it's locked in a gear manually. I just had the fluid changed at the dealer and they said the existing fluid was really murky, and it was only a year old.

Anyone else had these symptoms, if so what did you do about it?

I'm going to add Lucas "Stop Slip" and see if that helps, but I have a feeling it's going to need more than that.

If anyone has had their trans rebuilt or replaced, can you let me know what you paid for the work?

Your clutch pack is history. A new tranny will fix the problem. $3500 should do it.

Did the dealership say the transmission was slipping?

That means you are driving it hard

I actually don't drive it very hard. As an effort to diagnose the low MPGs I've certainly spent over a week driving with a dainty right foot, A/C off, and even paid extra careful attention to avoid accelerating quickly or braking when it's not absolutely necessary. This gives me almost no extra gas mileage benefit.

My car is just using TONS of gas, and I can easily and consistently get the engine over 3500k during normal and careful driving. It slips past where it should be REALLY easily.

I'll take a look at the transmission threads, but yes... I think a new tranny is in order here.

Any idea what a rebuild would cost compared to a new one?

Honestly, no idea... I don't think any Gen2 has had one rebuilt.

I know we share a drivetrain platform with other vehicles so you might luck out there.

Since you will be the first to have this done, maybe you could post a video of what its doing so others can relate.

There's some used tranny for sale on eBay.

You should question if the dealer did their job right, like if they filled it to the correct level. Was the transmission working properly before?

In any case, def the same symptoms when my Accord transmission failed.

There has been one member here faced with the decision of rebuild or buy used. I don't think her ever updated us on the final details.

I think there is some debate between the reliability of a rebuild and buying a used tranny. I think I might opt for a used one from a rear end collision before a tear-down and rebuild, but I honestly don't know enough about it.

If you can find a low mileage tranny, I would go for it, they tend to be cheaper in general. IMO sometimes rebuild tends to be iffy, depending on who's doing the job and if the parts are genuine or not. However, I heard H&A transmission does rebuilds for dealerships. (Located here in Cali)

Mitchkramez got a re-manufactured tranny. Since he still hangs around, I assume it still works. $3k for the tranny, $1.6k labor. He said a used tranny would have run $1.4k.

I suppose the difference here may be that Honda was the one to "re-manufacture" it, so I suppose it's different than a "rebuild".

007spy - you're right - the other benefit with the acura re-man was a 3yr/36k mile warranty on parts AND labor... think carefully

The transmission was put in in a day, and I've never had a problem with it other than it needing a little more fluid after about 1k miles. Mine no longer whistles at 60ish mph.

I drive about 7 minutes to work in town every day (and home and back for lunch) and if I drive spiritedly, I get about 14mpg. Driving like the car wants me to (an old man) I get about 16-17mpg in town - HWY close to 30 (it's pretty flat here). The rest of my car has about 124k miles on it, so she's not a newbie anymore either

Just so everyone knows, I've had the transmission checked out and it's operating normally. It may have had the wrong transmission fluid in it from the last time the previous owner had it changed, gummed up a bit, and needed a few days with the right fluid to start operating correctly.

I'm very happy to not have to buy a new transmission

How many drains and fills did they do? You can't get all of the fluid out in one drain, and you will never get it ALL out. If bad fluid was really the issue a 3x3 drain and fill is pretty much a must.
