Well the car is 7 years old and has 108K miles on it so I know its a little overdue for the timing belt change. I was considering doing this myself and I was reading a D.I.Y on the TL side and it looks to be a pretty straight forward job, but im just worried about lining up all the marks correctly. I dont mind taking the time to do this, probably over 5hours of labor, and Id end up saving a buttload over doing it at the stealership. They quoted me $1,000 to replace the timing belt, water pump and to adjust the valves. I know 70% of that cost is labor cuz parts are about $300. After asking my old highschool autoshop teacher and a friend of mine whos a mechanic, im leaning towards just getting it done at the dealer. They both said the same thing, that replacing the belt and water pump isnt too hard but lining up all the marks and making sure that everything is perfectly lined up and in position is something that should be left to someone whos trained to do it.

So right now im not too sure what to do. I just spent over $1200 on my car and dont feel like spending another $1000 on this crap.

So wut do you guys think? Try it myself or just take it to the dealer?

you need quite an array of tools including torque wrench, air tool/crank removal tool (for the crank pulley), feelers for the valve adjustments and etc... also need a service manual.

try getting more quotes, i know members on here have been getting their 105ks done for 800 or less.

do the plugs yourself at least. thats what i plan to do and that may save you close to 100 bucks.

Well I do all my work at my old highschool autoshop so I have almost every tool imaginable and I already did the plugs myself about a month ago. But yea, im gonna go to a few more dealers and see which one gives me the best price.

One thing that always weighs heavily on my mind is that the dealer and some reputable shops warranty their work. To me that is worth alittle extra coin. And thats coming from someone who doesnt let anyone touch their car (me).

Wow, thats an awesome deal. But was it done at a dealer or at a shop? And if it was done at a shop, did they use genuine honda parts?

I would get a shop/dealership to do it. Or, if you know a mechanic or someone who can walk you through the job on site, definatly go that route.

It was done at a performance shop that specializes in Honda/Acura and Japanese cars in general. All genuine parts. Labour is about 4-5 hrs, and parts are under 200.

Hey does anyone know any shops that specialize in honda/acura in the NJ area? Im gonna go to a few dealers today and see which one gives me the best price, but I also wanna find a honda/acura specialty shop and see what price they give me.

the shop i normally go to did mine for $450-$550 i forgot the exact amount. a friend of mine just took his TL there for his timing belt a few weeks ago.

Is it in PA? Wuts the name of the shop? I wouldnt mind driving like an hour to the philly area to get it done for $550, especially if they come recommended from a fellow Azine member
