What does a flashing engine light mean?

I was driving home from AC a few days ago, and I noticed my engine light flashing on for a few seconds, but it didn't stay on. Right before it happened, I had to accelerate; this has never happened to me before when accelerating... Should I get it checked out? Some people told me it could be just a glitch.

According to the Service Manual, a flashing MIL means you have misfires happening at a rate that could damage the catalytic converter system.

However, there is a TSB for a reflash of the ECU for certain year models due to an erroneous flashing MIL while under hard acceleration. I'm guessing this is your problem.

Search the TSB page:

Engine working properly or is asking the driver to Wide Open Throttle the beast.

Post #2 may be a little more accurate than mine.

But OP, a flashing MIL, usually on most cars, means a severe misfire. Definitely something not to ignore.

I had this happen to me when i first took the car to a drag strip. I missed a gear and i guess too much stress on the engine made it light up and flash. After a couple of minutes it went away. Got it checked out the next day and everything came up fine. BTW i'm NEVER taking my car to a drag strip again. not worth it if its a DD.

You probably just need/needed the ECM to be reflashed per the TSB....

I'm 99% sure that's the issue with the OP's car as well.

^i second that, OP-only because I had the same issue(flashing check eng light), multiple times under hard acceleration, and got it resolved getting the ECM reflashed @ the dealer.
