Bogging and Hesitation on Acceleration

I have an 05 TL 6 speed. I notice a lot of bogging and hesitation while accelerating especially at lower rpms 2000-4000. It is most prominent in 2nd-5th gears. When ripping through gears it doesn't seem as bad but it does happen a lot. Any one have any ideas on what this might be?
Thank you

Perhaps a clogged EGR valve? No MIL?

Would a failing EGR valve cause emissions failure? I just got my emissions tested and passed.

High mileage? As the other poster said, no Check Engine Light?

My car has 78000 on it but this problem has been occurring for well over 40000 miles... it just seems like it has gotten a little worse. And there is no check engine light.

APP-- Accelerator Pedal Position-- sensor going bad, perhaps.
Not uncommon problem; there are several threads about it.

I tried looking for this subject but didn't find much. No that it's warmer and I am using the A/C it seems to be even worse. It feels like there is no power and it is obviously surging and it almost feels like it's missing.

Run a search in 3G TL with "APP pedal sensor"-- you'll get 72 threads, many of which apply, including https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/app-sensor-replacement-what-do-before-doing-830989/ and https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/app-sensor-replacement-question-818110/.

Hope that starts you off in the right direction.

I'm sure you would have probably noticed this and it's very low probability, but I had a similar symptom with a broken brake switch light.... the light mount was cracked making it misaligned (dealer tech cracked it replacing the dash on the cracking factory replacement program).... so the brake light was on / passing the brake applied signal to the ecu all the time... ecu modifies everything expecting idle power and slowing... so frequent odd hesitation, esp mid rpms on acceleration....

My car is doing the exact same thing. I should have an APP sensor in a couple days. I will let you know if this fixes it.

Does it feel like the revs are bouncing? Mines doing that now

What gas are you using? ping could lead to massive timing retard and feels like bogging/hesitation.

alex2192- I had no bouncing revs issue. The car would just fall on it's face between shifts. I got the APP sensor installed this weekend. I haven't gotten a lot of miles on it yet but so far I haven't noticed any hesitation issues. Could be in my head but the throttle response seems to be much better also.

Same issue

Hi. I know its an old post about the acceleration issues you were having with you TL. It sounds similar to whats going on with me. Did you ever figure it out. Thanks

instead of asking if the OP ever solved his problem, LIST your problems!
this way; we can run through our mental check lists to see if your car is suffering from the common problems, like clogged EGR valve, bad APP sensor, etc.etc.etc.

in other words; car problems are very unique. you could have a different problem then the OP.
and is also how you troubleshoot...by running down or listing known symptoms and double checking and cross checking with known problems.

Ok, I can do that

I have a 2004 acura tl 6 speed. For quite some time, Ive had this issue where the care intermittently losses some power. It is subtle. Kind of like the loss of power you get when you turn the ac compressor on. Just not the same responsiveness compared to other times when the car seems to be working It can do this for a few minutes, or longer. There is no relationship with ambient temperature. Does it in summer or winter. I have changed the following things so far

1. APP sensor

2. PCV

3. IAT sensor

4 New Battery

5. New spark Plugs

With exception to battery, everything is OE. Ive had no CEL or any stored codes so far. Any suggestions on what this may be?. Thanks

Same issue here (hesitation, small surging and then fuel trim, especially at light throttle. Inconsistent idle and hunting for idle between 1200 and 700rpm. I replaced the APP sensor with a used OEM unit-fixed!

08 Type S Same Issue

I have an 08 TL and I am having this same issue.. however mine has over 140K miles on. No check engine lights. Car is just literally like a dame snail compared my cousin's 06 Odyssey with the same engine. Odyssey 3.5 is currently 0-6 is about 6 seconds. Our TL Type S is literally like... 13 seconds 0-60.. also whining BADD and idling rough. I'm gonna change the coils out and see if it fixes it

I changed the APP sensor as well. Actually a brand new one from the dealer but no resolution. Without question, it is getting worse over time. The car feels like its always sown on power now. Hesitation of hard acceleration. Surge on constant speed. Multiple hard starts in the morning. Unless the APP sensor I got was faulty. Ive head of this happening as well but not sure. [

Sounds like the APP was not at fault. It's unlikely the new one is defective. See if you can return it. I would reinstall your OEM unit. My symptoms were much milder than yours. Just an educated guess, but I believe you have a fuel delivery issue. If you are not getting codes, then it's likely not ignition. There are multiple items in the fuel system delivery. There is a module controlling signals to the fuel pumps. One of the fuel pumps could be faulty, etc., etc. Someone knowledgeable needs to connect a high end scan tool and look at several parameters, to point them to a possible culprit.

You can check the throttle body-and carefully clean it, being careful to not bend the butterfly plates. Apply carb cleaner to a lint free cloth, and clean. Never spray cleaner directly into the throttle body. Unlikely to solve anything, but it's good basic maintenance.

So, those who were having issues, did you ever resolve them?

TL;DR My next step is to connect our Autel at work and view some live data, but I'm essentially looking for what you have found that solved the issue.

Yes I'm reviving this thread, because I'm having the identical issue. Light throttle everything seems normal, full throttle is mostly normal, though it still seems a little more boggy/sluggish. But the main problem is at moderate throttle, just as described above, it's like the A/C compressor is kicking in (I know it's not, but it's that kind of drain on the engine - almost as if there's an intermittent fuel restriction or the timing is being pulled).

I have replaced the APP sensor before, about 6-7 years ago. And if I recall correctly it had similar symptoms. But it eventually gave out, threw a DTC, and went into limp mode. So it made it easy to diagnose. However, I have verified that the APP sensor seems to be feeding the TPS correctly by manually operating the throttle cable at the APP sensor while watching the throttle body butterfly valve, and it seems normal. It's not necessarily conclusive, but it's a start.

So in my mind I've considered a bad knock sensor that is intermittently pulling timing, a faulty MAP sensor, or even poor quality fuel. When the issue first began, it seemed that it was linked to fuel and/or weather. Using non-ethanol fuel and dry, cool weather seemed to cure the issue. But now it's nearly always doing it.

Yes

My mechanic replaced the EGR valve as it's hose had split and allowed dirt to enter. I was advised that cleaning would not suffice. He also replaced the front side O2 upstream sensor. It ran a bit better, but the mild hesitation and idle drift continued, but was more mild.

I then replaced the APP and it has been running normally since-it's been about 35k since.
