Plea Bargaining a NJ Traffic Ticket
Alright to sum it up I got pulled over for doing 64 in a 50 on Route 1 by South Brunswick. He cut me a break by issuing a ticket for no registration instead. So Im not complaining. I checked the fee schedule and realized its $180!! So I was wondering since I'm unfamiliar with the way NJ handles traffic tickets, if I plea bargain will they give me an offense carrying a lower fine?
Also I don't need a lecture on speeding because for those who travel this road going 65 here is literally flow of traffic which is why I didn't even realize I was speedng. I just happened to get nabbed.

10-4. bring your registration card with ya to the court, tell the prosecutor that it was in process if your car was not registered at the time. if it was, say you had the wrong card as tsx_jdm said. should be just court fees
If it's the same ticket I got a few months back in Readington Township, you can't plead! It's a really funky ticket in that there is no lee-way to plead down because the cop wanted you to pay a mediocre fine instead of a big ticket that could be plead down. There are no points with this ticket. Call the court 2mro and find out. It's better to pay now and be over with it than wait for the court date and realize you can't do a thing.
Most clerks that answer the phone will be able to tell you if the ticket can be plead down or not.

Im from the area, went to Rutgers, and i can basically confirm that if you go to court, there gonna hit you with court fees and all that and waste your day. so avoid court aswell. i once got a ticket in NY, and i was a student at the time, i wrote a letter to the prosecutor and judge explaining the issue, and they let me go. You didnt have evil intentions, and its quota time. idk if it'll help, write a letter stating that its not that you didnt have it on you, its that you couldnt find it at that time and were flustered. make a photocopy of the registration and attach it to the letter and send it in. hopefully your registration was issued before the ticket, they may just dismiss it, or just say you have to pay.

Let me clarify. My car is registere, I just had the expired registration on me and forgot to have the updated card in my glove box. Just stupid oversight.
Also this ticket was issued in North Brunswick and that's the court I'd have to go to. So if anyone has any experience at this court let me know.

Court is a waste of a day and court fees and such. My gf got a no registration and it doesn't matter, the court still made her pay the $180 and it was a waste of time/gas and she took off of work..
PS If I was in your car you probably would have gotten away...

heres an excerpt from the last link i posted:
Any person violating this section shall be subject to a fine of $150, of which $25 shall be deposited in the Uninsured Motorist Prevention Fund established by section 2 of P.L. 1983, c.141 (C.39: 6B-3).
If a person charged with a violation of this section can exhibit his driver's license, insurance identification card and registration certificate, which were valid on the day he was charged, to the judge of the municipal court before whom he is summoned to answer to the charge, such judge may dismiss the charge.000 However, the judge may impose court costs
i think the fee's really depend on what the court wants to charge you. from my personal experience, 50 to 150 is the range of court fees.

it seems like $180 is a lot of money to throw away but once you factor in lost work time, gas, court fees like a few people have said, i think its easier just to pay it off. plus not having a moving violation and thus no points will save you from spending more money on ins in the long run.
to add on, just pay the ticket. there is no points involved here so there nothing to plead down to. usually, you plead down using the "unsafe driving" to void any points. If u want to take a chance and show your correct card go for it, but as others stated costs of day off, drive from NY etc. just call it a wash and pay the man.. GL
Just to add to the "just get it over with" argument, I did the same. Glen Rock cop pulled me over on Route 208 last summer. Didn't give a crap about my friend (I'll just say his dad is high up with a big police department in my area), but he gave me a ticket for unclear plates (he said I shouldn't have a chrome license plate frame) instead of 80 in a 55. Decided I would just pay the ticket to get it over with, since I was starting college, and it wouldn't be worth it for me to go argue it, especially since I figured the court fees would be the same as when I had a ticket from my accident, which were $33. Didn't think it would be worth it for $20 to go there, especially if the cop would be there and possibly give the real story, which would have ended badly. BTW, is it bad that I've gotten pulled over more in my I30 (normal sedan) than my old CL
im OTJ in NJ. i can tell you theres no way u can beat it. even if it gets to plea bargaining they will call the cop and ask what he wants to do, atleast in my dept they do. the cop will prob tell him that he gave you a break on speeding. the prosecutor is only the middle man, the cop makes the final decision. failure to exhibit is failure to exhibit whether the reg is at home, lost, diff car, someone else has it, etc.
court fees in my town are $32. then think about gas, taking off of work, sitting in court all day. is it really worth it? you got a break. be thankful. pay it lolol

my sister got a ticket 53 in a 25 in a known speed trap in my town. took it to court, no lawyer. prosecutor took it down to following a funeral procession or some BS. went from being 28 over, aka like 300 bucks plus 4 points, to $56+ $33 court fee. no points. you can always go, and ask the prosecutor to adjust it. worst that will happen is you wasted your time. almost always goes down though

Just an update to all:
Had my sister in law who's a lawyer go in for me as I don't have time for this. She took care of it and got the ticket dismissed. Had to pay only the court fees of $33. If anyone else needs representation PM me.
