NJ Inspection

Figured this is the best place to ask my question since most of have tint on our cars... Well, basically, I have my 2 front windows tinted so I'll most likely fail inspection. Any independent gas stations/ places that I could go to that wont hassle me about the tint and how much would they charge? My inspection expires at the end of the month.

Some gas stations will let you slide only if you show up with the front windows down because they are worried they will get caught.

I once had to come back to get my inspection done because I pulled in with my front windows up. The tint was only 35%.

I'd like to know a spot also! Maybe even a spot that doesn't fail you with a test pipe.

That crazy that you have to do an inspection for windows...I mean here in LA it's illegal to have your front windows tinted also but we don't have an set inspection where they look at your tints...just have to worry bout gettin pulled over and gettin the ticket! Good luck man

New Jersey State operated inspection sites are very tough. They will fail you for having water droplets in your headlights. The plus side is that the inspection is free if you go to them.

NJ is real tough when it comes to inspection! They failed my sister bc the edge of the windshield whiper was chipped.. i guess it is bc it's free.. just depends on the state I guess. I wanted to redo the tint anyway but not ready (money wise) to pay to remove and put them back on.. I got quoted $100 to remove and $250 to redo the whole car again.

I have currently am having a similar situation as Esco. My inspection sticker is expired as of 01/10. Has anybody recently passed an inspection anywhere in north jersey with tint on front windows?

I'm actually licensed to inspect cars in NJ, laid off from the job right now though. I can tell you from experience that its going to be tough to get a good sticker with tint in the front windows because most inspectors are afraid of losing their license which is what would happen if somebody from the state showed up with tint. And yes the state does send out people to check. Sorry to not be of help but Jersey is tough.

i HATE NJ tint laws had to settle for no tints in front, don't need any unnecessary tickets.

Thanks for the feedback Dave. I may check out that Citco in Newton Stolen. I feel like my chances would be better asking somebody in person as opposed to on the phone or not at all. Hopefully, it makes it more obvious I'm not a state inspector or anything.

I seriously need to get my car inspected. My car is due this month. I have tinted headlights, as well as the front ronjon bumper which means I don't have a front license plate. I just ordered an electric pop up plate, but that's the least of my problems. My windows are tinted as well and my rear side markers. My winter stockies need tires...FML. How am I going to pass? Anyone know anyone that works at DMV

Your best bet is to go to a gas station or shop that does inspection and see if they'll give you an issue about the tints... NJ Inspection will enjoy failing you- no doubt about it!!

It worked out in my case cuz the tint was already fading.. I wanted to re-tint but wasn't set on when.. I ended up peeling the front tint off myself.. got it inspected.. and retinted it for $250 with high grade film.

at least you only have the car inspected every two years. Your inpection fee is basically covered in your registration fee so it is not really free. In NC one of the things they check during your annual state inpection is tints. If you have any they charge you an additional $10.00 to make sure they are legal. I knew of someone that would pass any car for the right price but he got caught.

I forgot to mention I'm in VA/ DC metro area, so I don't just want to make the drive up just to fail.

to the OP, sent you a PM.

My friend can tint windows really well. He tinted his car last winter in the freezing weather and the tint's still on today.

If you want, he can take them off for you, and put them back on again. It's a cheap alternative, if you guys wanna try that rather than pay so much at a shop; let me know.
