1 year extension sticker for NJ inspection's

I wanted to start a thread on this because I'm licensed to inspect cars in NJ and have worked at a centralized inspection station in NJ. There are a lot of people that are getting these 1 year extension stickers in the mail and I wanted to make everyone in NJ aware of something very important. That 1 year extension sticker is ONLY to be placed above a "NEW CAR DEALER" sticker, as it extends the 4 year NCD sticker to 5 years. For those of you that have 2008 cars in NJ that you purchased preowned in another state and it already has a NJ approval or 2 year passing sticker on the car, don't put that extension sticker above the 2 year approval sticker. It's not met for that and does not extend a normal 2 year NJ approval sticker. Hopefully that clears up any confusion on the matter. I'm seeing a lot of this on the roads in NJ and I want people to know the right thing to do.

Yes I got two as well. Mine came with a note that said the 1 yr sticker was for all cars that were 2006 or newer. Why would they send it to me if it wasn't valid??

Ok, I have a question. I got a sticker for my personal car which i purchased new in 2008. Then we picked up the TL. It's only had one owner and still has the original inspection stickers on it. It's an 07. Would I be able to get an extension sticker for this or because it is preowned no? I know it sounds stupid but I was going to call Motor Vehicles and ask, then I saw this thread.

The problem is that the state doesnt have a clue as to what they are doing. Yes your car would qualify for the extension sticker if you had a new car dealer sticker. How ever If your car is 06 or new and has already been inspected and has a passing sticker for 2 years, that extension sticker does not apply to you because you can't extend a passing sticker, only the new car dealer sticker.

If its registered as a normal daily driven vehicle and it is 1980 or older, it gets an idle test. No more dynos. 1981-1995 get the two speed idle test, which is similar to the idle test, but the second part of the test involves reving the engine to approx. 2500 RPM. If everything is good, the TSI test should take around 30 seconds to complete. They don't check for nox gases anymore. Just CO and HC. If its registered as a collector vehicle, all they do is verify miles and you must have a collector car voucher with you at the time of inspection. That is available at DMV and looks almost like a NJ registration.

In NJ, the sticker stays with the car provided its a New jersey sticker and the vehicle is registered in NJ. Since the car is an 07, If it has a "New Car Dealer" sticker, yes it would be eligible for the extension sticker. If the car has the purple 2011 or blue 2012 passing stickers you can't put the extension sticker above either of those since you can't extend a passing sticker. Passing stickers are good for 2 years if it's a passenger vehicle, 1 year if its a commercial vehicle.

No unfortunately not LOL. If you have the New Car dealer sticker just put the extension sticker above it. If you have a regular passing sticker and your due this year or next, I can tell you that the process is so easy that the inspection is usually done in less than 5 minutes now. All they do with passenger cars now is emissions so with a TL they are going to plug into the OBD connector. If the check engine light functions right and is not lit with the car running and the readiness is good, the car is going to pass. That's all they check now on 1996 or newer passenger cars that have gas engines.

Therein lies my problem. When I went to register my nova, the DMV agent said I had to register with standard plates because they didn't offer qq there. When I went in for inspection, I failed for HC at idle. With as heavy as my cam is, there's no way I'll ever pass. What do I do now?

It just gos to show how unorganized the whole elimination of safety inspections for passenger cars is turning out to be if you guys are getting two extension stickers in the mail. I really wish the public had been better informed of what to do. Of course you guys know your only allowed to use one extension sticker : ) And make sure you place it above a new car dealer sticker only. If your car dosent have a NCD sticker, don't use them as the extension sticker only extens the NCD sticker for one year.

I'd talk to another agent if they are telling you that they don't have QQ tags for the nova. You could also look into registering it as a collector car and you wont even have to do an emission test. You are limited on miles doing it that way though. just curious, how high was the HC.
