This is directed more to TriGirl:

Drove back to LA just now at 1PM from OC to test what mpg i could get, again reset at speed on the highway. Went ahead and put on my full rack w/o bike:

conditions/variables:
-88 to 99F change in temperature, ending in LA.
-relatively full gas tank (indicated 3/4 tank at end of trip, indicated in picture below)
-a/c on the entire time
-cruise control on, never going under 60 mph, gone up to 70 mph only momentarily.
-slight uphill from OC to LA. route was 405 N to 605 N.
-71,xxx k miles.
-on the highway, 6th gear the whole time. Never downshifted to accelerate/pass.

results:

it could be that older fairing you have? the new one is pretty low profile.

hmm. interesting. my brother and i custom fabbed the mounting brackets and arms for the older fairing. so...perhaps. can't really test it anymore (i could, but won't since my roof is currently unblemished and i'd like to keep it that way). the only issue i had with the new fairing is that it sat on the sunroof! so we went with the older fairing (my brother had spare parts). i also have full upright mounts as well, which may create more air turbulence over the roofline of the car.

thanks for posting this though. at least it confirms your rack set up can still yield 31mpg!!! still miss the rack look on my car (makes it a hell of lot easier to find thr car in a parking lot )

I might PM you later about your roof rack. I'm starting downhill mountain biking which means one car at the start, one at the bottom. I have a rack on the other car but I might have to add one to the TL. I weighed myself in full gear, 260lbs. Even with 8" rotors, they get pretty hot.

just for 5AT, car diet is like human diet.

if you drive nicely with featherlite throttle all the time (at least a week or two) then car will gradually start spraying less fuel @ same rpm @ same throttle position.

and once it's settled, you can get 38mpg @35mph in 4th gear
and 35-38mpg @ 60ish mph in 5th
(i'm not quite sure of the 60mph because when the limit is 70 i reach 80 at the bottom of the hill and slow down to even 55 by the top of a big hill)

once you slam it, even once, car occasionally (i think for hyundai it was 1 out of 3-4 injection) sprays more fuel than required to keep the engine "ready to jump on" and keep does that until car is sure it won't see any sudden throttle opening.

the only way (i've came to conclusion) to eliminate the previous driving history is to disconnect battery for a good time and reconnect. i'm about to do it right now -_-; damn semi, i was scared i jumped on the gas.

i'm guessing this "artificial intelligence" is why standlone ECUs are never up to par with reflashing OEM??
