Less than a week ago I filled the tank with $60.00 dollars of premium gas. And now I got 230 miles for the entire tank and the gas light is on.

^Terpnation- at 23 MPH, you are lucky to get 20 MPG actually. The actual will be probably 19.5 and the MID just rounded to 20- when you do the calculations I bet that will be the case. I normally have 26 MPH and get 19- I have a heavy foot so it cost me 1 MPG which I'll gladly pay for the fun of stomping on the gas.

At that MPH, you need a hybrid or fewer cylinders to get better mileage. You could drive a Camry, Altima, Accord or any other v6 equipped sedan and get very similar mileage. Even an i-4 TSX won't be much better in those conditions.

23 isnt that crazy low. My MID is saying 29 and the MPG's are fine. Ditch the 5AT.

How much does it cost you to fill your tank and how many miles can you get out of it?

It cost me ~$60 and I got 230 miles and my gas light is on.

terp-your MPG is completely normal for the TL. honestly if MPGs were you're biggest concerns...well i think you know the rest.

230 miles...that is about right. the TL only has a 17 gallon tank. be thankful you don't have a 21 gallon tank then have the light go on...that's a $75 fill up (ala MDX).

when i used to DD my TL i would get about 230-250 miles out of a tank when the light popped on. again avg speeds were around 25-26 mph and avg 18 mpg (i have a bit of a heavy foot). when i drive like an old person i recoup the 1mpg. now a days i just top the tank off with a few to 6 gallons these days. even in the MDX i don't wait until the light. i try to fill up just after the gauge drops below the 1/2 way point. it's less traumatizing to my wallet.

your other option...bike commute or public transportation.

That is what I got today with 30 Dollar Premium Gas.

I was driving like a grandma. People were honking, cutting me off, flippin the bird at me. Only 1 MPG difference. I was hoping at least to get 25 mpg.

Go buy a damn Prius already

The TL is rated for 20mpg city and you're getting that or even 1mpg better. What's to complain about?

^Window sticker from a 2005 TL btw. The 07-08 Type-S were rated for 19mpg.

I've done some costly maintenance, like changing timing belt, spark plugs, transmission fluid, tires, etc...; and all these render no dramatic improvement. The V-Power from Shell gas station is eating me up. I spend about $120 a week to fill up...

What's discouraging is that most TL owners complain about the same thing, which probably indicates that nothing can be done about it. Why did Acura design such a high fuel consumption vehicle?
there is got to be a problem because noway a TL takes that much gas. You bought a high mileage car, have you checked the car accident history, have you checked the alignment? Do the tires wear evenly, does the car pull to the side?

Driving style has much less of an effect than average mph. As long as you drive reasonable there won't be much of a difference when driving like a granny especially with an auto. Fuel system cleaner won't make a difference as long as you run premium. Your mpg is good for the mph. Theres nothing wrong with your tl. Enjoy driving it and if you can't live with the mpg, sell it. Any of these supposed improvements are going to be on tenths of a mpg.

^^i don't think terp got it.

he had a 20mph avg...and 21mpg over 20 miles. this is good!

terp if you want 25 mpg you're gonna have to drive an avg of closer to 40+ mph. your MPGS (as IHC has mentioned multiple times and others) is directly correlated to the avg MPH you drive. you didn't consider this MPG concern prior to purchase of a TL? honestly filling up with premium is only like $5 more than with regular. and maybe $200 or so a year more than regular.

If I'm not mistaken I'm pretty sure this would decrease the life of the engine.

This is what it is at now. With only 20-30 miles highway driving.

What made huge difference was after I reset my Gas Pedal and put 33 PSI in my tires from 30 PSI.

With this there were a few bursts of me flooring it. And starting off slowly from a stop and accelerating slowly to moderately.

I think I can get maybe 400 miles to the tank.

You complain about how poor your MPG is yet you floor it a few times as soon as your MID reads what you want it to?

WTF? Do you not read anything people are writing? It's like you want there to be a problem with your car.

In response to this post:

In the first picture you have only gone 20 miles. As I said, that means nothing. It's not far enough, you need more miles to get a fair average. LISTEN and stop posting meaningless crap.

Not surprisingly with the higher average mph in the second picture, the mpg went up, who would have thought? This sounds a lot like what I've been saying all along. The change you're seeing is from a higher mph, it has nothing to do with the other changes you made. And stop saying you reset the gas pedal, you can't reset a pedal. The ECU only changes shift patterns, DBW programming and such. No measurable changes to mpg can be made from the reset procedure.

Miles to empty means absolutely nothing. Go down a long hill and watch it count backwards. It's a rough estimate and it's constantly correcting as your mpg changes. The fuel gauge is not linear. It will generally fall quicker the closer you get to empty, making the miles to empty just a rough estimate that changes constantly. What do you think happens when you're getting 15mpg in the city and jump on the freeway for 4 hours at 30mpg? You can go from an estimated 150 miles to empty to 300 miles to empty.

Seafoam through the intake is snake oil. It's not needed and does not help. Something tells me you will use it.

You have been helped. There is no way to get better mpg in your TL unless you alter the drive somehow to raise your average mph. There is nothing wrong with your TL. You can throw as many BS products at it as you want and "reset the gas pedal" as many times as you want and it will not change.

Lawn jobs? I think I must have done literally 100s of them when I was growing up. I was very creative in fact.

His car is perfectly fine. Mine gets 13mpg city when my average mph is low. Normal.

I used RP in all 4 of my TL's over the years. I can confirm a minor performance gain by using RP oil and K&N gold oil filter.

I used a K&N drop in on my old 2G TL, but I couldn't notice any performance boost. However, it was cheaper to service my air filter once purchased.

How have you confirmed a performance gain? How do you think a filter and an oil can possibly increase performance?

Mileage log and feel. When I made the switch a long time ago in the 2G, there was a noticeable improvement in mpg and feel. The car had a lot of miles by then though. I've been using RP though ever since. I ran it in my 06 Manual TL, my 08 base w/ tech, and my Type s.

Feel is not valid. In a 3500lb car it takes 30-35 hp to feel a difference. Are you claiming a 30hp increase?

Mileage log will not show changes unless average mph is included.

Again, how do you think an oil and filter will give better mpg and performance?

No I am not claiming exact hp gains, just reporting my own personal experience when I switched from using an Acura dealer synthetic blend oil to RP and K&N. Take it with a grain of salt if you want. But I could feel the difference in my car that I drove daily on the highway alot for my job.
