NASCAR: 2011 Season News and Discussion Thread

I know nascar isn't popular around here, but, yesterdays' race kicked ass. At least the ending was good.

I'm not a fan of the tandom draft, but that should only last a few years until the surface gets seasoned.

congrats to trevor bayne.

It was great to see the Wood Brothers 21 back in victory lane. I've been following them since the days of Foyt/Yarborough/Pearson driving for them and been to Daytona several times, mostly in the early 70's. It will be interesting how the "21" team handles the rest of the season considering their success. For me, the jury is still out on the "tandem draft" but i think it makes for better racing than the huge packs of previous seasons.

Yep. Watched a number of the races the past couple of weeks. Biggest thing that bothers me about the tandem draft is the direct radio communication between the two drivers. Seems to me that's a little too much of a "cheat". Just my

I was rooting for the Red #14 and thought he had it. Until that last restart when he didn't have a partner and then, even after hooking up with Martin, went straight backwards. From outside front row at the Greeen-White-Checker to 13th (iirc).

Cool to see the retro-painted Wood Brothers #21 win though.

I think that may have been bayne's 2nd cup race. And to a nascar thread.

The closing rate is way too quick for any type of action on the track. A few accidents were b/c of that.

We'll have to see how this points system shakes out at the end of the season.

Stewart to drive F1 car in exhibition: Barring an unforeseen scheduling hiccup, two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart and 2008 Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton will swap racecars in an exhibition later this year, Stewart-Haas Racing spokesman Mike Arning confirmed Saturday. The seat swap comes at the hands of Mobil 1, a mutual sponsor for the two drivers, and is expected to take place at Watkins Glen International sometime during the summer. The cars involved will not be show cars. They will be legitimate race-prepared machines. Hamilton will man Stewart's road course ready # 14 Chevy, and Stewart will drive Hamilton's 2010-model F1 McClaren. The respective drivers' race teams will travel with them to the event to tune the cars

NASCAR officials are looking at changes for Talladega based on last week's Daytona 500 but admit that maybe nothing needs to be done. The two-by-two drafting that dominated Daytona is expected to play a key role at Talladega, the next restrictor-plate race. So, what might NASCAR do before the April 17 race there? "We're still looking at some things," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. "I don't think it's something that's broken; that's my personal opinion. We'll have to see. I think we'll just have to sit back and watch a little bit of it and see what happens....We're getting some feedback from teams, but, ultimately, we have to make the decisions on what is good for the garage area. So, we're continuing our internal discussions, knowing that the timeline is very short because teams are preparing for Talladega already."(

My understanding was that the tandom drafting was b/c of the new surface at daytona? Nothing really changed from last year.

it was a couple of factors

a. new pavement
b. ever since b keslowski pushed c edward at dega and won the teams have been working on the cars cooling system so the could push for longer periods of time
c. the new nose, and spoiler help keep the cars very balanced

if they chopped a couple inches off the rear spoiler the car would not be so stable and tandum drafting would not be as easy.

i think the cars look alot better with out them, and now going off in the grass wont be as bad as it was with the splitter and it braces before if you broke a couple of those braces you were pretty much fucked

This should be fun. I believe Stewart can drive just about anything.

Just missed a win today. Again.

In other news, Kyle Busch gets busted doing 128 in a 45 in a Lexus LFA. By NC statute he may lose his license.

NASCAR driver Kyle Busch apologized "for my lack of judgment" after being cited Tuesday afternoon for careless and reckless driving near his home of Mooresville, N.C.

Police in Iredell County said Busch was clocked at 128 mph in a 45 mph zone while driving a 2012 yellow Lexus LFA.

Richard Childress Kicks Kyle Busch's Ass

Kyle Busch and 65-year-old car owner Richard Childress were involved in a physical confrontation after Saturday's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Kansas Speedway, sources told ESPN.

NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp confirmed they are looking into it.

Childress approached Busch and struck him with his fist in the garage area after the race, according to the Charlotte Observer.

The fight was broken up and insults were exchanged before Childress put Busch in a headlock and hit him again, the newspaper said. ....
