How fast do F1 Cars go...Mercedes finds out

So you think you know how fast an F1 car goes?

Check out this test that Mercedes did and see for your self:

OMG, I just watched that...without soudn...and all I can say is OMG, absolutely amazing how fast he went around those other three cars...

AMAZING

i want one...

think we can make an F1 Car street legal??

I was wondering what is the difference between F1 and Indy??

they both look the same, but i figure it has something to do with how the car is made/designed/regulated?

Awesome Vid...gotta watch it in sound when I go home...

That was sweet. I remember seeing an older version of that sort of thing, I think with BMWs or some other car version. Those F1 cars are massively impressive!
The sheer acceleration when he rapes the three other cars in the last turn was beautiful. I need a car that can pull like that.

Is there a link to a downloadable version? I hate streaming media.

F1/CART differences
-3.5 L naturally aspirated vs. 2.65 turbocharged
-weight
-materials (brakes, engines, pads, tub0
-length, heighth and width
-acceleration/braking is massively different from F1 to CART
-overall top speed (CART is 35-45 mph faster @ top end)
-engine revs: F1-18K plus
Just to name a few!

AWESOME! Thanks for the info!, i'm going to have to browse and check out some more differences,

what about tracks, which ones do the racing on the regular streets that are boxed off, you know through like some random country town in Germany or France...ever seen that on SpeedVision?

F1 cars and CART cars operate on different racing philosophies, which are reflected in the different rules governing car specs. F1 does not race on ovals. They are a totally road and street race series. In addition, the rules allow for much more technology to go into the cars than in CART. In effect, F1 is a very prestigious test-bed for cutting edge automotive technology, therefore, the cars are not only amazingly quick, fast and maneuverable, but also resemble the space shuttle when it comes to the gee whiz factor. Seriously, many of those innovations make it into production cars. This of course has a downside in that only a few teams have the kind of cash necessary to have a clean shot at winning the series (Williams, Ferrari, McClaren are the big three now, in the past, Lotus, Benetton when they had M.Schumacher behind the wheel, the rest are laggards).

For example, the clutchless/semi-automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters are an F1 creation. So when you see a Ferrari with semi-auto trans, M3 with the Sequential Shift, or even Lexus GS400 push button shifters and Acura Sports Shift or VW Tiptronic shifters, you are really talking about transmissions tested in F1.

Traction control is straight out of F1. Active suspension is straight out of F1. Diagnostic computer chips that monitor engine performance and alter engine parameters if need to, carbon fiber brakes, all F1. I mean what is in F1 cars now are trully amazing bits of tech that you might see in production cars 10 years down the road when the costs come down (some F1 cars will brake the inside wheels of the car alittle more in a turn so that the car can make sharper turns, I think some are also rumored to have launch control which is a computer program that allows you to launch the car much quicker at the start than you normally would be able to...F1 starts from a stop, not a rolling start like in CART...not legal in F1 now, but I believe will be in a few years ??...imagine launch control on CLs).

F1 also uses gasoline engines and have groved tires (the grooves were originally designed to reduce speeds...but one look at the MB test and you can see that reduction in speed is a relative term).

CART cars are about competitive racing, not technological advances per se, meaning, they don't want any one team to tower over the other. This means keeping costs down and making cars more equal team to team. Thus high-high tech is not the name of the game, although these are not your average cars either. However, there is no semi-auto clutch, no active suspension, hell not even aerodynamic wheel covers allowed. They are heavier and use forced induction (i.e. turbo) engines that run on methanol, not gasoline (methanol is weird in that when it burns, it is colorless, so you can't really tell who's on fire, but its safer in that you can dilute methanol with water, so spraying water usually stops the burning...with gasoline, spraying water would only splash the flames in different directions, you really need a dry fire-extinguisher for gasoline).

One thing not really mentioned a lot is that F1 cars have flat bottoms while CART cars have channels underneath that act like inverted wings. The channels suck the car to the ground at high speeds. Although this makes for a more stable car at higher speeds (thus generally higher speeds in CART on oval tracks), it also means the car doesn't dance around the track like F1 cars. F1 cars rely soley on their wings and tires to adhere to the track.

All this de-emphasis on tech means CART races are more competitive in general than in F1. Sometimes in F1 the whole race will be dominated by Ferrari. I mean no one is within a lap of the leader all race. CART races, well, all the back and forth when it comes to points leaders reflects how competitive the races are and the series as a whole.

There are many many other differences (I mean have you ever heard F1 racing V10s or V12s revving at 16,000 RPM plus!!! It's a high pitched shreeek....awesome!)

All in all, I love both F1 and CART, although my heart is with CART. Too bad CART is mismanaged though as a league.

BTW both CART and F1 run on roads and street courses (i.e., Long Beach/street and Laguna Seca/road for CART and Monaco/street and Monza/road for F1). But CART also races on ovals, which F1 does not.

I wasn't able to save it either....it wouldn't allow anything other than a stream from the site. Great race though!
