Mark Webber expects several top 10 qualifiers to sit out Q3 in Saturday's Spanish Grand Prix qualifying session amid suggestions that having as many fresh set of tyres for the race as possible will again be key to victory.
Webber's team-mate Sebastian Vettel won the last grand prix in Bahrain from pole, but was pushed hard by Kimi Raikkonen, as the Lotus driver conserved tyres in qualifying then charged up from 11th on the grid to finish a close second.
After setting the seventh fastest time in Friday afternoon practice, Webber reckoned this would be a weekend when many drivers prioritised race pace over qualifying position.
"It is always nice to finish qualifying with a few sets of tyres," said the Australian. "You always want to try and get through all three sessions with minimal damage on your tyres, and there will be no exception this weekend - we will see.
"We could see people sit out Q3, those that just get into Q3, and they will do that to save tyres."
Asked after practice in Spain if he felt qualifying or the race was the more important this weekend, Vettel replied: "Most important is points and points you get on Sunday.
"Surely I know the reason we go out on Saturday is to qualify as high as we can, ideally to get pole, so nothing has changed but we have seen that during the race there is a lot of things happening with the tyres. Where you start on Sunday does not automatically mean that is the position you will finish."

But that's the only way to preserve the short-lived Pirelli tires - do as little laps as possible. The past couple of races have repetitively shown that one extra tire stop is all that it takes to change from winning to losing.

Thanks to Pirelli, now that after made it to Q3, some of the contenders were laying back with their efforts in order to save tires.
"Double world champion Sebastian Vettel did make it through but didn't push for pole, preferring to save his tires for a race which is expected to be decided by tire strategy." according to CNN.
Very soon, no one will be fighting for the front row starting positions, to preserve his tires for the race.

I am hoping that the stat that sez no one has ever won from beyond the first row sticks tomorrow too. That'll teach 'em for trying that strategy

Spanish Grand Prix: Williams crew injured in pit fire
....
Three members of the Williams team were taken to hospital, while four Caterham mechanics were treated at the track's medical unit.
A Force India team member was also treated on the site after suffering smoke inhalation.
The incident is believed to involve a Kers unit, which sparked a fuel fire.
Caterham, who occupied the garage next to Williams in the Circuit de Catalunya pit lane, explained that one of those injured had a minor hand injury, with three others suffering respiratory issues.
A Williams spokesperson said: "Four team personnel were injured in the incident and subsequently taken to the medical centre. Three are now receiving treatment at local hospitals for their injuries, while the fourth has been released. The team will monitor their condition and ensure they receive the best possible care.
"The team, the fire services and the police are working together to determine the root cause of the fire."

Coughlan's a POS

^ He may be, but he's also extremely knowledgeable.
I think alot of their recent success is due to Coughlan. Sam Michael although a nice guy was not as technically centric view. I don't know for sure but I'd bet Coughlan did whole house review and rearranged priorities for technical objectives. This year's car out of the box has shown more promise than the last few seasons.

I don't know exactly what the secret to Wiliams' current successes are but I am very happy to see it. I miss seeing the privateers at the pointy end of the grid, particularly Sir Frank. I'd have to agree with your other views as the demise of Michael and the use of Coughlan sure seemed to have made a difference.

Biggest upset since Panis won in Monaco for Ligier? Fisichella winning Brazil for Jordan? Vettel winning Monza for Toro Rosso?

I think I got this season figured out in F1. DONT pick a driver who has already been on pole for a previous race
