Canada has been reinstated on the 2004 calendar following a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on Wednesday.

Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, have issued a revised calendar that now includes the Montreal venue.

The grand prix will be held on 13 June bringing the number or races next year up to 18.

It deliberately precedes the United States race at Indianapolis on 20 June. This will keep the costs down and help to bolster the sport's exposure on the North American continent.

The race is provisional at this stage and is subject to a financial deal with the teams running without tobacco sponsorship.

The race had been taken off the calendar due to the country’s anti-tobacco laws – which came into effect on 1st October and prohibit tobacco advertising at sporting events.

In September F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone gave the country hope that the race could be reinstated when he admitted he was trying to find the funds to pay the five teams who are sponsored by tobacco companies.

He said: "I'm working on lots of ways to try to get enough money together to pay the teams what they are going to lose with their tobacco sponsorships -- it's about $30-million.

"If we can do it or the [Canadian] government can find a way to allow us to run branded, I'm sure I can find a way to get it included on the calendar next year."
