filing tax return :(

I just filed my tax return, instead of getting $800 back, they substracted $600(last years economic stimulus rebate), so now I get $200.
man i was hoping to use some money to pay off my credit card, lol..
anyone know why they're doing this? just wondering

Be lucky you are getting some coin back. I dread the day I do my 08 taxes.

You're about where you should be for taxes, about even at the end of the year. Unless you like giving the Government your money to hold from your paychecks.

I don't think that should have happened.

i thought the $600 stimulus was a "loan" for the next year's taxes.

Either whatever tax program you used is fucked up or your an idiot. You do NOT subtract last years rebate.

No matter what I claim for some reason I always end up owing a total of $800-1000 even with deductions. Sucks....

Your return was probably initially calculated with the Recovery Rebate Credit included. If/when you answered that you received a stimulus check last year, it was taken back out because you already got the money. The Recovery Rebate Credit is for those who did not get a check last year.

I use taxslayer. I filled everything out on the taxpayer info. At the bottom right it asks me if I recieved a 'Economic Stimulus Package' to enter the amount, which I did "$600". They substracted exactly $600 from what I would have originally got without the substraction.
I did not add the rebate onto my tax, just entered it where it asked if i did or not.
I read the link, are you saying I should check the box 'Check here if you did not receive a stimulus payment.' ??

I haven't heard of taxslayer. This is all I found:

https://www.taxslayer.com/support/article.php?id=667

Look in your credits/payments/withholding section of your return and see if any credit was applied. Before you answer "yes", you will probably see the credit. After you say "yes" it will probably reset to zero.

You did it correctly. If you hadn't received the check they would owe you the $600. Don't think that you would have received an extra $600 on your 1040 if the rebate didn't exist.

They owe me $300 because I had a kid born in 08. He was not included in my rebate check because he wasn't on my 07 tax return.

so why am getting $600 substracted from what I originally would have got? If i dont enter in that $600 when they asked, then I get a $600 more..

Goddammit, do you know how to read? You normally would get X amount. If you DID NOT apply for the rebate you youd get X amount + $600. They ask if you got it last year because if you did, you can't get it this year. If you did NOT get it last year your return would be +$600, but since you already got it, it is NORMAL, NOT, I repete NOT -$600. So YES there is a $600 swing based on if you got the rebate yet or not. This is not fucking rocket science, you can get the $600 rebate ONE TIME. If you got it last year you do NOT get it this year. If you did not get it last year you DO get it this year, is that really that complicated?
