Man, wasn't AMD at something like $7 few years ago...before they finally started to catchup and now surpass Intel? Wasn't too long ago either Ithink....like 2015 or 2016?
One of the tech youtubers I watch showed a recent investor's report/press release from AMD...their profits are up something insane like 99% year on year compared to last year....lol...but of course lot of big companies are making money hand over fist now...

AMD Gives Another Bullish Forecast; Data Center Sales Double
(Bloomberg) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. gave a strong forecast indicating that market share gains, particularly in servers, are helping it make up for a tight supply of chips. Fourth-quarter revenue will be about $4.5 billion, plus or minus $100 million, Santa Clara, California-based AMD said Tuesday in a statement. That compares with an average analyst estimate of $4.25 billion. The chipmaker is on course to exceed an earlier forecast and post a sales gain of 65% for 2021, it said.

AMD lands Meta as customer, takes aim at Nvidia with new chips
November 8, 2021
Advanced Micro Devices Inc on Monday said it has won Meta Platforms Inc as a data center chip customer, cementing some of its gains against Intel Corp.
It also announced a range of new chips aimed at taking on larger rivals such as Nvidia Corp in supercomputing markets, as well as smaller competitors including Ampere Computing in the cloud computing market.
After years of trailing the much larger Intel in the market for x86 processor chips, AMD has steadily gained market share since 2017, when a comeback plan spearheaded by Chief Executive Lisa Su put the company on a course to its present position of having faster chips than Intel.
AMD now has nearly a quarter of the market for x86 chips, according to Mercury Research.
After securing Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, as a customer, AMD now has deals in place with many of Intel's largest customers. It also has deals with Alphabet Inc's Google Cloud, Amazon.com's Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Corp's Azure.
But AMD on Monday also announced plans to take on rivals beyond Intel. The company announced a chip called the MI200 which is an "accelerator" designed to speed up certain tasks like machine learning and artificial intelligence.
The new AMD chip is designed to take on Nvidia's A100 chip, which, along with other chips designed to speed up artificial intelligence, has helped make Nvidia the most valuable U.S.-listed semiconductor company.
AMD said that Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee will use the new chip in its "Frontier" supercomputing system.
AMD also took aim at smaller rivals. The company announced a new central processor called "Bergamo" that will ship in the first half of 2023. The "Bergamo" chip will have 128 computing cores, which are useful for cloud computing companies that rent out their chips on a core-by-core basis to outside customers.

New AMD Instinct™ MI200 Series Accelerators Bring Leadership HPC and AI Performance to Power Exascale Systems and More
November 08, 2021 12:00pm EST
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 08, 2021 -- AMD today announced the new AMD Instinct™ MI200 series accelerators, the first exascale-class GPU accelerators. AMD Instinct MI200 series accelerators includes the world’s fastest high performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) accelerator,1 the AMD Instinct™ MI250X.
Built on AMD CDNA™ 2 architecture, AMD Instinct MI200 series accelerators deliver leading application performance for a broad set of HPC workloads.2 The AMD Instinct MI250X accelerator provides up to 4.9X better performance than competitive accelerators for double precision (FP64) HPC applications and surpasses 380 teraflops of peak theoretical half-precision (FP16) for AI workloads to enable disruptive approaches in further accelerating data-driven research.1
Exascale With AMD
AMD, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and HPE, designed the Frontier supercomputer expected to deliver more than 1.5 exaflops of peak computing power. Powered by optimized 3rd Gen AMD EPYC™ CPUs and AMD Instinct MI250X accelerators, Frontier will push the boundaries of scientific discovery by dramatically enhancing performance of AI, analytics, and simulation at scale, helping scientists to pack in more calculations, identify new patterns in data, and develop innovative data analysis methods to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery.

FWIW, I'm visiting Austin and met up with some tech friends last night. During conversation one of them who works at Freescale talked a little about when Lisa Su was CTO there, said she was really special in her leadership skillset.
Was reading her Wiki today and didn't know she was instrumental at TI developing their chip processing change from aluminum to copper interconnects. Having used both when developing ASIC's at TI, their AL process was one of the worst and their Cu was the best. TI's 95nm 7 layer Cu FTMFW

Generally speaking I have 30-40% of my portfolio in individual stocks that I can play with and the rest is just in an index fund that follows the market.

Same. I honestly haven't sold any stock in the past two years other than selling my 5 shares of AMC when it peaked out at $60 or whatever. I generally will buy and sit on it until I need it for something which, until now, hasn't happened. That said while I don't look for instant gains, I also don't look for instant losses either and buying a "hot stock" at it's peak is a bad idea. Chances are that the hype dies out and the share price will fall so the time to get in would be then. As retail investors get more and more into the market, the share price for some shares isn't really based on company performance but is somewhat based on hype and marketing.

I bought at $10 or something, sold at $60. Didn't make anywhere close to that amount of money (only had 5 shares) but it was just a meme stonk anyway.

The Mercury Research CPU market share results are in for the fourth quarter of 2021, showing that AMD now comprises 25.6% of the overall x86 market, its highest share ever, on the strength of its increasing gaming console shipments. That beats AMD's prior overall record of 25.3% that it reached 15 years ago in 2006. Meanwhile, Intel has gained share in desktop and notebook PCs as it continues to wrest some of its losses back from AMD. However, Intel continues to slowly lose share in the lucrative server market.

AMD is now worth more than rival Intel
Score another notable win for chip giant AMD (AMD) against its heated rival Intel.
AMD's market cap currently stands at $188 billion after shares rose nearly 2% in Tuesday's session. Intel's market cap is $182 billion. That marks the second time in a week AMD's market value has climbed above Intel — the first time it happened was a week ago.
