Dayton, OH Area...tell me what you know about it
This is a call to all the fellow Aziners in the Dayton OH area. I am asking for advise, comments, and anything else you have to say about living there. I maybe moving there and am interested in knowing which neighborhoods are "best" (no kids in school age yet), so I guess I am looking at location, is there a (good) place to get your Acura fixed, what's there to do culturally/socially?
All responses are appreciated.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Museum in in Dayton is a cool place to visit. Kings Island amusement park is nearby too.
For social activities, you could have Acura meets with Scottman111 and Water-S. Lots of good sawmills not too far away if you need good hardwoods for cheap.

So what did you end up doing?
I dated a girl from there when I was in college, spent a good deal of time hanging out. It's a small older town, it has its nice parts and bad parts like any other city. The crime rate there is curiously high for what you'd think. There's a lot of nostalgic areas from the city's heyday that are known as classic places to visit. But it is cheaper to live there, and if you're a rural kind of guy there's lots of great property to be had. Not much goes on.
However, this day in age I would advise that you look into outer regions of Cincinnati and then commute. Unless your job absolutely demands that you live in Dayton. If you plan on having kids, it's not a bad place to raise a family.

I had forgotten about this thread.
I will find out in March where I will be going, is not up to me. Dayton is one of the potential places, and I would like to be in a safe area. I don't think that commuting matters since I have lived in DC before, so any distance or traffic would not compare.
I have heard that Centerville and Kettering are good places to live. I won't be buying a house there, rather trying to rent something nice. I "must have" a yard (fenced) and three rooms...a garage would be nice, but not a must.

Yeah, I want to know where I want to be before making a commitment of that magnitude...I have friends who have moved and bought before knowing the area well and most have not been pleased...

I live in Tipp City, which is about a half-hour North of Dayton... It's not a bad place to live, and if you want something suburban, go East (as mentioned: Centerville and Kettering) also Beavercreek is over there - my wife grew up there, and it's a happening place for the dayton area.. They have 2 malls: the Fairfield commons mall (which is centrally located near many restaurants, stores, etc...) and the Green which is more upscale, newer and great during the summer or holidays because it's considered an "outdoor" shopping center. Anyway, if you want more suburban yet, Tipp City and Troy are very good school districts and still not too far from down-town. Just a little insight from someone who is actually from the area... Look me up if you wind-up coming around... we could maybe chat cars and I could show you around...
