Tinting hassles in WV
I'm not sure how many (if any) members live in West Virginia but figured I would put it out there. I had my car tinted a year ago at Driven Dynamics and they did a stellar job. I asked for 35% all around to make it legal in WV. Well I took it in 2 weeks ago for a safety inspection and they failed it for being too dark (30%). Aparently I didnt compensate for the tint already in the glass from the factory. There is no leeway at all for front windows in WV and they said the state police are really cracking down. The shop I went to was threatened with having their license revoked for two tint infractions. The back windows they would let slide about but the front is a no go.
I needed lighter tint on the front two windows and most shops only care 50% in the 3m line. I didnt want to have really dark in the back and light in the front. I was able to find a shop in Sterling (Custom films and window tinting) that had it in 5% incriments. These guys did a great job and the best part was that they had a meter right there to show that it was legit. Suprisingly most tint shops I talked to didnt have a meter. The funny thing is you can barely tell it's lighter than the back but it passes inspection.
Just take into consideration the factory tint when you are getting it done and save yourself a lot of hassle. i heard in VA they have a 7% leeway on the meter reading to compensate for this but that might just be a rumor.
