does this sound right?

So i recently bought my TL in new jersey from a dealer, i paid for tags titles n fees but i live in MD, at 1st they told me i need to go to the DMV or police station for a vin verification, both places looked at me dumb, now the dealer told me to get a safety inspection.... Isnt that the same as a regular state inspection and wouldnt that be something covered in the tags title and fees?

You do not need a VIN # verification in MD.

If you purchase a vehicle out of state, you pay for the vehicle itself, any freight charges and dealer processing fees. The state tax, inspection costs, and tag/titling fees are all paid here in MD. The inspection is NOT part of the tag/titling fees. You have to have that done by a licensed inspection station and once you have that certificate you give that to the tag/titling agency or MVA and they will give you hard tags once everything has been paid for.

Some dealers have the ability to collect out of state taxes and tag fees on new cars, but I haven't heard of that on a used car.

Did you pay NJ taxes or MD taxes? What plates are on the car now?

I bought my TL from dealer in PA. I also paid tags, title and tax at the dealer. Only difference you and me is i transfered tag from my CL to TL. I'm sure you have temp registration and tag. That's what they gave me. In my case, dealer wanted me to get MD state inspection as soon as i get back to MD and mailed certification to them. So i got state inspection as soon as i got MD and mailed the certification to them. After that, the dealer processed it all and mva sent registration to the dealer and they mailed it to me. And then i put my tag on TL.
