URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT: THE CAR HOBBY NEEDS YOUR HELP

Bill to Provide for Single License Plate Introduced in Virginia Legislature

Virginia legislation (S.B. 771) prefiled in the legislature for 2013 proposes to reduce the number of license plates furnished by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to registered motor vehicles. Under the bill, favored by state hobbyists, the DMV would issue only one license plate (rather than two) and require the single plate to be attached to the rear of the vehicle.

We Urge You to Contact Members of the Senate Transportation Committee (Contact Info Below) Immediately to Request Support for S.B. 771

S.B. 771 would apply to every registered motor vehicle, semitrailer or trailer, including hobby cars such as antique, reconstructed and replica vehicles.

S.B. 771 would protect the aesthetic contours of collector cars and relieve vehicle owners of the burden of having to create mounting holes on fabricated bumpers, etc.
DON’T DELAY! Please contact members of the Virginia Senate Transportation Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their support for S.B. 771.

Please e-mail a copy of your letter to Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org. Also, please forward this Alert to your fellow car enthusiasts. Urge them to join the SAN and help defend the hobby! Thank you for your assistance.

Not only are the front plates aesthetically unpleasing, they block air from hitting the radiators and it obviously costs more to stamp out the additional plate. There is no reason for it.

Got a response from one member today:

Thank you for your e-mail regarding Senate Bill 771, that allows for
automobiles to display only one license plate. I am glad to support
this common sense bill that will save the Commonwealth much needed
resources and that will allow car owners to maintain their vehicles in
the manner in which they choose. Thank you again for your e-mail and
please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions,
concerns, or information you would like to share.

Bad news. SB 771 was killed this afternoon by the Senate Transportation committee.
State Police and VDOT were opposed - they claimed they need the front plates to identify traffic and toll violators.

They should just come up with a sticker that goes in the windshield to replace the front plate if they are worried about identifying toll and traffic violators. Come up with a scanner (which I'm sure they already have) that can read the stickers from a distance.

Puny brained humans Can't stand the front plate

Rich, I did the same thing for 3 years, until they set up a trap near the campus and my friend got a ticket for no front tags.

i wasn't too optimistic about this bill passing. the toll violators are caught on camera from the front. they also scan the tags to match them with the EZpass tags. the traffic violators.... unless they are getting you for no front tag or expired registration (revenue tix).

it's like the 35% tint bill from a couple of yrs ago...that got shelved indefinitely. politicians really don't care about the minority car enthusiasts (they probably don't get it), and they are only concerned about public safety.

When we got a camera speeding ticket from Maryland and redlight camera picture from NC we received a ticket with pictures. They showed the rear license plate. NC is a one plate state. We have ezpass and originally got it when we lived in Pa. (another 1 plate state). Oh I was not driving with either of those tickets.

^^red light cameras show the rear tag. toll cameras can show front or back, that is, if the cameras even function.

red light cameras early on in cali used to show the front and the back of the car. i'm not sure if they still do now since someone sued the state for invasion of privacy.

with the traffic violations that i cited above, aren't typically caught with photo enforcement but with police looking through binoculars and another officer holding a radar/laser gun on the side of the road during a "speed trap" day.

Redlight camera tickets in Wilmington, NC show 3 pictures. Front of car, going thru redlight and then rear of car showing license plate. Someone also tried to sue for invasion of privacy but the cameras are still working. The speeding cameras in construction zones near Baltimore worked excellent. Very clear pictures.

The toll cameras in Nj work very well. They show the rear license plate.

This is so stupid that we have to run the font plate. Can't they just put the cameras or whatever on the other side of the gate, so they can catch the rear plates if they're so concerned about public safety?

You just moved here? Why? Born & rased here in HR & I'm getting tired of it. I'm moving out west to north Cali in about 5 years. There's nothing going on here in VA let alone in HR. It's mostly just for retirement, at least here in Williamsburg.

Actually why I know is because I was driving my moms car and drove thru a ezpass lane. I forgot there was no ezpass in her car. She received a picture ticket. I explained what happened and they excepted the .35 cents I sent them. Yes that is a 12 mdx loaner.

Theyd get more money for fixing roads if they charged the right amount for registration costs (hint - by weight). Then again, this is the government we're talking about. Be it county, state, or federal, the money they take in never goes to what its supposed to go to.

Also, the toll booths down here have cameras for the front and rear of the vehicle. The only reason they won't get rid of the front plate is because cops are trained to aim for the front plate when catching speeders.

Believe it or not, there are far worse places than HR. Military brat raised in Fayetteville, NC (FT BRAGG) area and then moved to Valdosta, GA (MOODY AFB) for a contracting job. Now im here contracting out of FT EUSTIS or Jointbase blah blah. But i must say other than some very rough areas and shitty roads. Its not that bad here....
