04 Type-S Transmission Fluid
Finally got my k20z1 block back from the machine shop getting its rod bearing replaced(number one was fried, dumbass previous owner ran it hard with almost no oil in it) and the installation is about to begin. I'm gonna need to get some tranny fluid and i know almost everything says use honda transmission fluid only, but at lordco i was getting some parts and the guy at the counter told me that there were better substitues, such as something like royal purple. Is there ANYONE that does not use honda transmission fluid for their type-s six speed? And if so what are you using? Traditional Honda fluid is hella expensive and if never been shorter for cash.

who says you cant use anything else?
You can use anything on a Manual Tranny honda. Its only the automatics that seem to be sensitive to non-honda fluid. I use Amsoil syncromesh 5w30 which is FAR superior to the garbage Honda MTF. Shifts much better, especially in the cold. People also have good luck with Redline. I dont know anything about RP but Redline is the preferred oil for our cars on .

Try penzoil Syncromesh, does a great job and is widely used in TL's to fix the 3rd gear grind/pop out issue. PPl have been using it in integras and civics as well to fix tranny issues when using honda fluid.
I think the amsoil is the same oil but would have to confirm that because I Know they make it under a few brand ( it's GM syncromesh as well )
Autozone has it at about 6.5$/quart

Honda MTL is the only fluid i use.. It is one of the few fluids they manufacturer.
i've been using it and changing it fairly frequently.. no grinds yet!
and yes- i use it.. when you compare with other brands, it works out to be the same.

Acura Fanboy
My '02 Type-S suffered the 3rd gear "wall" where it would not shift into third sometimes without pulling back to neutral and trying again. I replaced the Honda MTF with Amsoil Synchromesh MTF and the problem was corrected immediately. At a subsequent service at Acura, they put Honda MTF back in. Six months later, the 3rd gear wall reappeared. I promptly replaced it with Amsoil and I have been shifting problem free for over two years now.
