Turbo speculation for next gen ILX
Turbo speculation for next gen ILX
From Car and Driver:
Acura ILX Could Get Honda?s New Turbo Four, But Will the Tuners Return? ? News ? Car and Driver | Car and Driver Blog
Based on what the Acura rep said, it seems to me that the TLX might get a VTEC Turbo within the current generation.

If they really wanted to shove the turbo in there, they could have let the 2015 model languish until the turbo was ready for North American use. This car would be PERFECT with that 2.0t. They could have even gone with two trims (1.5T for the low end and then step up to a Type S with the 2.0T).
I hope the J35 doesn't go away. I'm in a total dilemma about whether to consider a 2016 ILX over a Accord V6 coupe. That V6 is a gem. I kind of want to own one before it disappears. Knowing Honda, they will kill it in their mainstream products. The ILX has all the tech-y toys though...
Apparently the new Civic will get the 1.5T as the base.

As for the V6s, Honda really knows how to build one. Being as they can achieve 35 hwy for the TLX with 290 hp, I don't really see why they'd get rid of it. I mean, maybe in 10 years that would be bad mileage, but until then the mileage is more than good enough. Plus, a big V6 competes well with 300+ hp germans, but if you stick a little turbo 4 in there and try to make it run with a 335i or S4, it would just be plain ridiculous.

As I recall, the current 8DCT can only handle 200 lb.-ft., but perhaps they've been developing a higher torque version alongside the VTEC Turbos. Plus, there's also the RLX's DCT that can obviously handle more torque, so maybe it could be adapted. We can also hope for a MANUAL TRANSMISSION, but I'm afraid that's not happening for Acura.
Colin...You are correct in that the 8 DCT couldn't handle the torque of the turbo but IMAGINE how great it would be if Acura used that engine and matched to a manual for their Type-S version. Somewhat detuned engine for the ILX at 240 HP and maybe 290 for their TLX.
Nedmundo...you and I have the same fantasies my friend.

Yeah, I've heard that the Civic will probably go to a little turbo engine.

When they announced that the turbo 4's were going to be produced at the Anna, OH plant, they also said they want to get the turbo 4's into as many models as possible. That statement made me fear for the future of the V6 in the Honda/Acura lineup. The V6 might go away in the Accord/TLX, and instead only live on in their SUVs and the Odyssey minivan.

In the TLX, I wouldn't be surprised to see the current I4/FWD continue as the base, then a 2.0T in FWD/AWD, and an AWD V6 model with more power than the current V6. It gives Acura an opportunity to expand the TLX range upmarket, which makes sense, especially given the weak sales of the RLX. This would be similar to BMW's 3 Series range of 320i, 328i, and 335i, which span about $30k in price from a base 320i to a loaded 335i.
