Rock Chips

Hey Guys,

As expected Im starting to notice some minor rock chips on the fender and hood of my car. I was wondering if you guys knew of any fixes to this and also what are your opinions on the 3M Clear Bra. Worth it?

A clear bra is the best bet to protect from new rock chips. Expect to spend around $6-700 for a proper install. Thats for the bumper, fenders, hood, and mirrors.

For the current rock chips, you will have to touch them up. Ive heard good things about Dr Color Chip, but Ive never used it. The cheaper option is to use touch up paint from the dealer. Fill the chip with thin layers, letting each layer dry about for about 20 minutes. Thats the best way to make sure you dont have big blobs of touch up paint on the surface.

I've had a clear bra on my car for 6 years and have never had a rock chip. But the clear bra itself has not lasted and required replacement once and needs it again. Steer clear from Venture Tape.

I've used this on other cars and it works pretty well.

I would get a clear bra, I've had good experiences with them. You mostly need it for the hood and fenders since those are the metal parts, bumpers can absorb little rock chips. I got mine done for $260. Try getting a quote at tint shops.

Get it extended from 12" to 18" or furthest out as you can to have more coverage.

Thanks for the replies!

Does anyone know where I can get a custom Clear Bra?
I'm not too sure how to look for tint shops either.

It all depends on your location.

A good place to start is in the Regional Forums. Just click the "Regions" tab at the top of each forum page. There, you can get more specific answers for your region. Another option is to ask your dealer who services them with clear bra or tint.

BTW, to answer your original question, I've clear bra'd each of my last three daily drivers and it is worth every penny for rock chip prevention. In my current daily (CTS-V) I have 1/4 hood, front bumper, headlights, side mirrors, rocker panels, sides of rear bumper, and top of rear bumper (where it meets the trunk) done and it cost me around $900 here in the Cleveland area. It's worth every penny as I have a couple of scrapes on the clear bra that would have been paint scrapes without it!
