It keeps throwing me off.
How many of you actually let off the brake pedal and rely completely on it- at least I'm assuming it will work that way.
The main intersection outside of my house is a hill, thus I'm nearly always stopping on a hill at the red light. I still haven't gotten used to it. I keep launching the car. My problem is I do it all quickly by reflex (I also have a bad habit of letting go of the brake THEN putting it into first) and usually the car is rolling backwards but because it isn't, I have too much rpm when it engages.
I guess I have to train myself to fully press the clutch, put into first, let off the brake, then slowly gas it up. Every car I've driven up to now, I always have it in neutral, let off the brakes, put into first and then zoom off quickly. It always worked for me until this car.

It'll only hold you for a second or so; you can't rely on it to keep you there any longer than that. I alternate between a couple different MT vehicles and the ILX is the only one with hill assist, so it catches me offguard too. While I appreciate the help sometimes, I also like being able to use my fancy footwork from time to time instead of relying on it. To my knowledge there's not a way to deactivate it.
I doubt THIS will help but it may shed some light that it is possible.
^That is from a Jeep forum. Try that or search your manual to see if the ILX has its own way. Seems possible though.
HSA Off
If you wish to turn off the HSA system, follow this
procedure:
1. Start with the engine off and vehicle in PARK (automatic
transmission) or NEUTRAL with clutch out
(manual transmission) with wheels straight. Apply parking
brake on manual transmission vehicle.
2. Start the engine.
3. With the engine running, the brake applied, and the
clutch out, rotate the steering wheel a half a turn counterclockwise
from center.
4. Press the “ESC Off” switch four times within twenty
seconds.
5. Rotate the steering wheel a full turn clockwise (half
turn clockwise from center).
6. Cycle ignition switch OFF then ON.
7. If the sequence was completed properly, the “ESC
Malfunction Indicator Light” will blink several times to
confirm HSA is off.
Steps 1-7 must be completed within 90 seconds to turn off
HSA. Repeat steps 1-7 to re-enable HSA functionality.

Hill start assist only activates when you press the brakes on a hill...If you don't depress the brakes, it doesn't turn on so you can just balance the car with the clutch and gas (bad idea) or watch the lights and let go of the brake a little early before the light turns green. I've gotten used to it...guess that's what 12k miles of driving does

Bump on this... How the hell do i turn this amateur feature off. I can understand how this would be helpful for a person new to a manual transmission but when you know how to drive it hurts the car. I sit there burning up with clutch because the car holds on the brakes but i am trying to move.
Im sure someone learning on an ILX will find hill shifting much easier. Someone that is used to compensating for the incline will have to adapt. That normal with pretty much all technology. Imagine being your grandpa adapting to how easy technology has made life.
