I recently purchased a PS3. I needed an upconverting HDMI DVD player and I figured for a few hundred dollars more I can get Blu-ray and a game console. I thought at the time that Blu-ray would win this dumb-ass format, but that was before the Paramount/Dreamworks deal. Oh, well, the BD movies I have so far (Planet Earth, Flags Of Our Fathers, Letters From Iwo Jima and 300) look sweet on my Pioneer plasma.

I'm still sitting on the sideline. I'm waiting for a clear winner and for prices to come down. I would imagine that is 2 years away.

Love it so far and hope it wins the battle. Then again HD-DVD players arent TOO expensive.

FYI -- It looks like Amazon is having a 4-for-3 sale on DVDs, including Blu-ray. I just bought Happy Feet, Casino Royale, Weeds Season 2 and Scanner Darkly for $73. Nice way to expand that HD library.

I just got a Polaroid 42" LCD 1080p HDTV. I frickin' LOVE it. I can't imagine going anything other than full HD. I also added a Blu-Ray player, and I love that too! The only gripe I have is that it takes about 90 seconds from the time I press the power button on the Blu-Ray player to the time I can actually get the player to open to accept a disc. It's annoying, but I was told by a Best Buy person that it was to cut down on the number of returns. People want to apparently slam in the disc and are impatient, so the only option would be to make it slower?! WTF?

I also recently just got the Logitec Harmony 880 remote. I love it! Press one button and everything turns on! The only thing that sucks is that it doesn't work if one other device is turned on, the 'one-press' feature does not work.

I love the in-wall speakers too!

I vote DVD is just fine with me. I would like to see a clear winning before I upgrade, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon. Which ever one comes out with LOTR's, might be the first one I buy.

I voted HD-DVD b/c that is what have... but I didn't buy it b/c I think BluRay will lose necessarily. I bought it b/c of my XBOX-360. Can't beat an HD-DVD drive for under $180.

I have a HD-DVD drive for my XBOX and a Dual Format LG player.

I've probably got an equal amount of bluray and hddvd discs, I really couldnt care less what the livery mechanism is so long as the end result is crisp clear 1080p.

I have an upconverting DVD player connected by HDMI. I think the "upconversion" may be a bit overrated.

Oh, I do have a PS3 and Planet Earth on Blu Ray but that's it. I have to say that the PS3 does an excellent job upconverting regular DVD's onto 1080p TV's. I've been watching season 2 of Rome and it looks amazing.

Is this on all discs? I know BD-J (Blu-ray Java discs like Pirates of the Caribbean) discs take longer to load.

I may wait even longer. I'd need a 1080p tv first.

Currently I have a higher-end DVD player so regular DVD's look good to me. There is such a minor difference between regular DVD and BluRay or HD DVD for me it makes no sense to upgrade yet.

However, with that said I'm waiting for computer BluRay burners to come down in price. I have an HD Video Camera and would like to burn my HD Home movies on BluRay.

But there again, burning the home movies regular DVD's still look great. BluRay disks will allow me to put a lot more content on one disk and play the files from my HD Video camera natively.

Not to mention the BluRay - HD DVD format war. Thought BluRay had it when Blockbuster made the move to only rent BluRay and now HD DVD just got a win with some major movie companies.

I hate format wars.

No offense but I think anyone who is actually putting money into actually buying the discs is just pissing it away. Even if I find a cheap blu-ray player (open box, sale, whatever) I will not buy the movies. I dont buy the movies for my HD-DVD players.

Get the players super cheap $200 or less and then netflix the movies. Its a win win vs. the format the war. You havent invested too much money on either format and you wont have yet another worthless movie collection when the next thing rolls around. Which will be much sooner. Neither format will last as long as DVD. Especially with the ongoing fight.

The problem is trying to find a bluray for $200...best I came up with was $380 at a best buy once.

I'm waiting too. I have Digital HD cable via HDMI with HBO HD, Showtime HD, and Cinema HD and they look fantastic. I know it's not the newest movies but I still watch a lot of it.

Off topic but that Planet Earth HD DVD/DLP shows to be narrated by some guy. I thought it was the one that Sigourney Weaver did.

They used her to do the American broadcasts, from what everybody is saying, it was a mistake.

David Attenborough narrated the series for the BBC; Sigourney Weaver did it for the American broadcast. I believe it's all the same footage, but Attenborough's narration is much better.

The series is a BBC series. Attenborough narrated the series, and the American's decided it needed to hire Sigourney Weaver to do an "American" version for the states.

The DVD/HD-DVD/Blue Ray contain the original Attenborough narration which is touted to be superior.

Actually, it is possible to buy the discs with Weaver's narration, but only through the Discovery Channel store.

i dont really care about high def movies. i love hi-def for watching sports. a regular DVD on a high def tv is fine with me right now.

but i agree with Siddig, get a cheap player and then rent the hi def movies.

I bought the HD-DVD player because it was cheap and I needed a good scalar anyway.
I have no idea who is going to win.

Even just 720P, at 85", HD-DVD looks so much better than DVD it's insane.
I always think the projector got knocked out of focus when I put a DVD in.
Dvds look fine, but HD makes you go WOW.

Is it worth getting either a blu-ray or HD-DVD player for a 42" 720p lcd tv?

HD is where things are at. My brother has a PS3 @ home which I use to rip blu-ray. The company I work for support HD-DVD. We just need one universal format. HD movies looks awesome up close and personal.
