TV Upgrade or Sound System

So I have a 47" LED LG 1080 120HZ and have two options:

  • Upgrade TV to a 55" LED LG 1080 240HZ 3D with 2D-3D conversion
  • Get a sound system. Energy Take Classics 5.1 with a Denon AVR 591 Receiver
I'm preparing for football season. Which would be better? The 3D for football, I'd think, would look amazing. The sound system would be good as well for everything. :d

Both will cost me about $400. (Got good deal on system & TV) I moved into a house (out of my horrid 500 sq ft apt) and both would be good as the living room is pretty big-- so the TV would be the perfect size for the living room. Yet, the sound on these TVs are horrendous compared to a sound system. So I'm not sure. Budget now only allows me to upgrade one :/

TV-I have a 65" Mitsubishi with a 7.1 surround sound....love it!

You can always do sound later. Instant gratification with the larger screen.

The difference in size of the TV is not THAT big. 3D gets old pretty fast. I have sold ONE tv for it's 3D features since they came out. Adding surround sound completely changes the entire dynamic of your watching experience. To me, its a no brainer. You already have a decent TV, no need to spend the money to replace what you already have.

47" to 55" would be a big difference with the size of the rooms it is now used in. He did just move. Would it not? I know many that use a 47" in their bedrooms.

The difference is negligible really. Would bigger fill in the spot more? Sure. However, the difference of being immersed in the sound with a decent surround setup makes a much larger difference in the overall experience then gaining 8" of diagonal screen real estate.

I'm talking about the effect of being immersed with a bigger screen in a bigger room. You are saying it's just 8" of screen, but it's almost 35% more screen.

47" screen about 950 square inches
55" screen about 1250 square inches

Coming from a small room and the 47" screen being farther away from the sitting area. Would make the TV smaller in perception, no?

Yes, and make it even harder to hear the shitty 2 watt speakers in the 1 inch thick tv. People get big tv's so they can say they have a big tv. Watching a 55" tv is no more enjoyable than watching a 47". If the room is bigger, eventually it may be a good idea to get bigger if you find yourself straining to see your still large 47" TV. There is no difference in experience though with an 8" difference of screen space. There is a huge difference however in a sound difference going from internal TV speakers to a proper 5.1 surround system.

That use to be the case, you do it, so you can have the same enjoyment that you get in a movie theater. And you need to sound.

Then why do people buy 55" TV's? To have a TV big enough to enjoy.

I understand your statement about the speakers pretty suck on modern TV's. But you do not have to have a big system to do enjoy the sound.

The reason for this post is, one or the other, for football. I'd rather have a big screen for sports, than a big booming sound.

Never said anything about big boomy sound. There is a difference between good, clean sound, and giant subwoofers that rattle the house. I cannot tell you how many times I am on a job where the client does not even notice a size difference when they do upgrade. They certainly notice the sound difference though. If you want to watch football on a big screen, then get a projector, a motorized screen and have fun. Also, while football season is coming up, is that the ONLY thing that will EVER be watched on this tv? Is adding 8" gonna make such a drastic difference for football, American Idol or whatever else will be watched on the TV? The answer is it will not make much of a difference. He can do whichever way he wants. I've pointed out my opinion. When he is ready to get his bigger TV should he chose to do so, maybe he will also go buy another car because it gets .5 MPG more.

No, you didn't, but isn't that what you get with a surround sound system, booming sound? Do you have a favorite, non component set-up for sound?

You keep saying only 8", again it's a almost 35% increase in the size of the screen.

When the sound is what cripples the newer skinny TV's, I wouldn't think other wise about what is noticed.

Watching American Idol no there want be a big difference (I hope to gawd, he's not watching that though), watching sports on a TV that can handle the fast HD motion will.

And yes, it is opinions.

I think good surround sound will make football more enjoyable than the bigger tv.

Surround sound creates an environment, it immerses you into the whole viewing experience. Yes, you'll get the "booming sound" here and there because it plays a role in the experience, but it isn't the main point/purpose of a surround sound system.

If you don't want the booming sound, then do a 5.0 or 7.0 system. But that would be like listening to Led Zeppelin or The Who with no drummer.... it just wouldn't sound right.

Don't need the whole experience for football. Just need the viewing of the game. And the .1 of surround is not the bass, but the rear sound.

But will OP only be using tv for watching football? Doubt it.

.1 is for the low frequency effects (LFE) channel... i.e. sub woofer... where bass comes from.

The rear sound (speakers) is included in the 5.x

5.0 = 2 front speakers, center, and 2 rear speakers
5.1 = 2 front speakers, center, 2 rear speakers, and sub woofer

Don't know, probably, but you can argue that point. I'm going by what was asked. Not what I want to push on.

Yes, I screw up my thought one the .1, was thinking even before the 5 became the norm.

I'd rather have the bigger screen and a set of add-on speakers like Audyssey.

No right answer. Do you have a room that could benefit from the 47? If so, get the bigger tv.....if not, get the sound system. You could also get a small shelf type stereo for cheap, and use that as a sound enhancement. I have my 15yr old panasonic shelf stereo hooked up to my 42in tv in the basement, sounds great.

Sound system all the way! You have a nice TV, 3D is lame IMO anyway, and as others have said surround sound really creates an immersive environment. It's awesome for sports because you really feel like you're at the stadium when you hear the crowd cheering from 360 degrees around you.

And on top of that, the movie watching experience is taken to a whole new level as well. You can't have a "home theater" without surround sound. DO IT! YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPPOINT.

Thanks a bunch.

I've decided on a sound system for now. I really only watch Sports, ESPN, Hells Kitchen, Dexter, and sometimes just listen to music. I think the prices of these TVs will go down soon-- so I'm hoping too buy a decent 3D TV 55-60" for <$1000 (already seen some good 55" for $999 ) and give my current TV I have as a gift.
