wrong forum...

Most will say Logitech, either 880, 890 or One. URC are nice, but much more expensive.

There's a rather extensive universal remote thread in the HT&E forum. Unfortunately, I can't get search to pull it up for me at the moment to provide a link.

There's also another thread with the 880 vs One

Lately I've seen a Logitech on sale for like $55. I think it was Amazon. Honestly, if you have cable with a 3-in-1 remote, you can just program that.

Harmony 670 here....I absolutely love it.

I also got the ESPN Remote free from Amazon Vine, but it still can't compete with the Harmony in terms of usability even though the screen is color and it can surf the web and stuff.

One of the many things I'm approaching curmudgeon status on is buttons. I really have an aversion to LCD panel or "soft" buttons. Combine this with the fact that the remote for my new receiver (Pioneer VSX-1018) has a bazillion discreet buttons and I sort of feel at a loss to find a universal remote that I'm going to actually like. Any recommendations come to mind for a button-holic? The offerings from Logitec and URC both seem to rely heavily on the LCD now days.

All of the Logitech's would need at least 10% more physical buttons than they currently have to even be in the ballpark of what I'm looking for.

FWIW - Here's the Pioneer 1018 remote I'm trying to accomodate.

Trying to understand what you are getting at here....

You can add as many buttons as you want to the logitech on the LCD screen.
Ie 8 buttons on page 1, 8 butons on page 2, 8 more buttons on page 3...page 4 5 6 ......

You can't really run out of buttons.

All your "inputs" will be assigned a one touch event.
Ie "Watch DVD" Receiver turns on set to DVD, TV turns on set to HDMI, DVD player turns on...etc.

No need to press input for each device.

That's the exact piece of information I was looking for a couple of weeks ago. Logitech's site and elsewhere have images of their remotes with varying amounts of buttons on the LCD but nowhere on Logitech's site or in the user guide (at least for the One) is anything mentioned about this.

Of course, the problem is that they're still LCD buttons.

Get the 880 or 890...no LCD buttons. "Hard" buttons are on the side of the LCD screen...instead of the touch screen the ONE has.

When you tell the remote (during set-up) what your devices are, it defaults alot of function buttons to the LCD screen. If you want to add more or customize them, you can do that all within the software.
