For those with Satellite TV

What do you do for broadband access?

I ask because I have always had cable, and been pretty happy with it. Now, I'm living in the suburbs about 50 miles outside of Houston and all we have is SuddenLink.com. We use them for cable, phone ane internet.

The phone has been fine but the cable and internet are less than desireable. About every 2 weeks, the cable internet seems to be down for a while. The cable company always has an excuse. My biggest problem is TV. I have 6 TV's in the house- 3 of them are HD and 2 of them have HD DVR Motorola Recievers on them. Of course, I pay extra for these two boxes and they suck ass.

I've been through 2 recievers in the bedroom and one in the family room. It would probably be more but I'm not home during the day to have them replaced. Anyways, what really bugs me is that I only get 2 HD channels. Fox and CBS I think.

So, if I switch to DirectTV or Dish, how does internet work? I still want high speed and I don't want to pay a ridiculous amount.

Any input is appreciated!

you could probably get those channels HD over the air. I do.

If so, then I guess it's just a matter of price.

I have DTV and have a 3mbit DSL line with AT&T. Not sure if DSL is an option for you.

Same setup. Not sure on the DSL speed, but it's enough. DTV would offer you Houston's locals in HD by the end of the year (in theory) if it's not already one of the 12 cities they offer it for.

My DSL + phone runs about $65 a month.

That sounds good but I don't think AT&T offers DSL in my area.

I have DTV and use Cox for HSI at 6dn and 1.5up.

With DTV you can get all locals in HD, with either H20 or HR20 box and the 5lnb dish. DTV offer HD NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox now in Houston.

50 miles from Houston with the right antenna should pick everthing up. Rabbit ears not so much.

If you have Tivo or DVR, yes.

^^^^ not necessarily true.

We have Directv and we only have to have our Tivo boxes hooked up to a phone line. The two HD-DVR's from Direct do not need to be hooked up to a phone line.

Also- we use our local cable company (Charter) for their internet service and we've been happy with it

I'm a little late on this one, but my DTV DVR (H20) does not require a phone line. Most of the newer DVR's get their program guides from the satellites, not a 2 am phone call anymore.

And DTV always says a landline is required for everything.

Phone line with the latest DTV boxes are only for ordering PPV or caller ID . Everything else comes over the satellite.

Not through the receiver. You'd have to call DTV to order your pr0n.

I feel DTV is better, that's why DISH has all those giveaways. You can get a good deal w/DTV to get going. The reason I went with DTV is NFL Sunday Ticket. Those Dish has more HD, I wouldn't switch. Plus sometime this year DTV will have a ton of HD channels.

DISH a problem keeping channels, they have drop a couple semi popular ones in the last year and made some people mad. I had DTV for going on 4 years, when there's a new channel available they have added it.

Check their channel line up and see which one you like. Though there is not that much difference.

DTV has XM and DISH has Sirius for music channels. I have XM in the call, so when DTV added it was good.
