Taking the HT plunge

I've finally decided it's time to upgrade the curret HT (Sony 27" Wega CRT & Panasonic HT-in-a-box)

Here's what I'm looking at ordering today

Samsung 1080p 56" LED-DLP Projection HDTV HL-T5687
Harman Kardon 7.1 Receiver AVR245
Polk Audio for the fronts (R50)
Polk Audio RTi4 Bookshelf Speakers
Polk Audio Centre Channel (CSi5)
Velodyne Subwoofer (DSP-12B)

There's also a pair of ceiling speakers already installed (for the 7.1)

Pre-tax total is around $4500 Canadian. Prices seem to be pretty decent, though I am not sure if $450 on the sub is money well spent. I have seen polk's for half that amount.

I have left off the DVD player because I think I will still use my old panasonic until I settle on a HD/B-Ray player.

Anyone got experience with the LED DLP?

The HK AVR245 is not their current model, so unless you are getting a really good deal you should look at their current revision, the 247. I'm a fan of buying refurb HK stuff from their store on eBay. You can save significant coin. I bought a AVR335 and a DVD101 that way. I had a problem with the first AVR they shipped, but they replaced it within a week and I've had no problem with the replacement.

I like the sound from Polk, I own a set of mid towers and a center. However I was disappointed that a driver failed in one of the towers at around age 5 and one failed in the center at around age 8. I was able to order replacements from Polk but that irritated me as I don't really drive them hard. They both failed in the same way. I could hear some buzzing coming from the mid range cone. When I eventually replace them I will look elsewhere because of my personal experience.

As for a sub, I don't know what posessed me to do this but I bought an SVS Sub PCI 25-13. It was a few hundred more than I thought I would spend on a sub. But damn that thing can thump. I watched SuperMan Returns last night and it was just incredible. My couch was shaking.

I have read mixed stuf about Polk too, but the R50 were on sale for $370 a pair, reg price is $899 (not that I would ever pay that amount)

The AVR 245 was also on sale, but nothing like the price cut on the polks:

Polks are a great speakers, I have owned at least a pair since 1980. That set I drove the hell out of them. Had to replace tweeters a couple of times and a mid once. But that what happens with Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. The second pair, never had a problem, I got them when I was in the AF. Those were used a barracks speakers.

Currently and the 3rd pair...

I have the 2nd gen. Sammy DLP (50") and still love it!

yeah, once you get bitten by the audiophile bug... it may never stop!!! I started off with a cheesy HTIB, and a 30" Philips CRT widescreen TV... then I swapped that TV for the 50"DLP... At which point I felt that the HTIB just didn't cut it... so I bought an Onkyo THX cert. A/V receiver and Polk speakers. I thought I was done... but then found out a friend of mine's boyfriend works for Sonance speakers ( www.sonance.com ) and she hooked me up with a $6k setup for about $1k!!! (7.1 with THX cert. front speakers!!)... this setup has the XBox 360 and HD DVD player and it's pretty much done.... I don't think I'll do anything else with it.

...then a couple weeks ago I got a 46" Samsung LCD 1080p with PS3 for the bedroom...

I'm pretty sure I'm done

i'm just getting into it too. But I can't afford much. I bought a used denon reciever online (avr-2803). I really hope it works perfectly. My old H/K reciever would shut off once in a while, and i never found out why. I gave it to my parents, but i doubt they ever use it. I wish I could afford new stuff, but oh well.

I'm thinking of building some cabinents soon. I just wish i had room for a table saw somewhere in my apartment ........maybe it'll have to wait, i'm still planning to move into a townhouse in the next year or so. I can build my crossovers first. I think i can build some pretty nice midtowers for about $500. then build a sub. maybe i'll use some of the subs i have, or they might end up in my car, i haven't decided.

i might spend 1-1.5k on a TV next month. Ugh.....maybe all my other hobbies will have to take a back seat for a little while.

look into buying your gear from the states the dollar is so high right now you might be able to get a much better deal. and dont buy your stuff from future shop, if you can find a good family/small guy place you might just turn up a better deal, or atleast get better gear for the same price.
