Speaker Cable
finally settling in and unpacking the stereo and realized I tossed my old speaker cable. Money is tight, i'm only hooking up center channel and front left and right (no rear surround sound for now)
I need something cheap...is this just junk?

or should I spring for this?
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1...atalogId=10053
speakers will just be on the sides of the tv and up in the center

Monster is a complete waste of money. For a relatively short run like you're describing
16 guage is probably fine, 14 is better, 12 would be fabulous. Home Depot has the
super-de-dooper HD Ultra Pro-grade wire at $27 / 100' .. its just 14 guage as opposed
to 18 guage - lol It'll do you just fine.

What's the difference if you pay for shipping if you can get a better deal?
50 feet of 12 gauge shipped from monoprice for $20.

Since we're on the subject of speaker cable, which gauge is appropriate? I mean, I know generally larger is better, but if I have tiny ass speakers, should I go with 12 or 14? And I'm talking, like the size of my iPhone small.
I need to order some to finally hook up the rear speakers.

Wish I had seen this sooner. I used the 14 guage in-wall cable from Monoprice for my surrounds. Plan was to use it for the fronts and center, too, but I slightly underestimated how much I would need. Not wanting to wait, I picked up the 14 guage wire from HD (50 feet for $20). I found the HD cable easier to work with. Otherwise, I don't notice a difference in the two.
As for what guage you need...

Lots of other good info on there, too, if you scroll up and down.

I've had 12 gauge before, and now I have 16. I'm sure people will chime in and say they can hear the difference, but I can't, and music/audio is pretty important to me.
I wouldn't get anything thinner than 18 gauge though, unless your speaker is REALLY close to your reciever

super cheap media center?
i'd like to hook up some sort of media center to my bedroom TV. I currently have a PS3 with an external in the family room with 500+ movies. I'd like to be able to get something that would allow me to just bring my external into the bedroom.
I thought about moving my Apple TV to the bedroom, but would rather use it for music on the main tv

Has anyone tried this?

I've got hardwood in my new place and using conduit above the baseboard would be a royal PITA to do for the surrounds.
Alternatively, anyone heard of Rocketfish for wireless rear surrounds?

Heard of the rocketfish, its decent. but cuts out if someone walks in front of it or you get interference from other wireless devices. The falt wire seems cool. I dont know how you feel about using conceler compound and then painting over it. A picture of your setup would give me some ideas for you.
FWIW I got the Rocketfish rear speaker wireless kit on Amazon marketplace, supposedly used (the box looked unopened), for $50. It seems to do what it's supposed to without problems. I have the sender inside a cabinet and the receiver under the sofa, so there are some obstacles between them. The RF seems to have gotten interference from the wifi when I had the receiver next to the wifi router. I separated them by ~5' and it seems to not be an issue anymore. Walking/sitting in front/on top of it doesn't cut it out.
So after using it for a couple of weeks, for my specific application, it seems like a good buy. But I gotta say the hardware feels flimsy as shit. This isn't a quality product. I wouldn't be surprised if it craps out after a year.

Not sure if you're still looking for recommendations, but I just pulled 500 feet of the Monoprioce 14AWG (http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2).
While I haven't wired it into my amp, yet... For the price, you'd be hard pressed to beat it.
