SoundBars...

Any input. Looking at Yamaha yas 70 and the Sony entry level one. I want ot keep it under $300. This is for a small room, actually my bedroom, and the TV speaker are not the greatest.

Most people who have said they have them seem pretty happy and impressed by them.

To a extent, yes. They can't be used in wide open rooms. They need to be in a closed room where the speakers can deflect off the walls. About the only way they are effective..

If you just want more sound then your tv speakers, then they are fine. If you want a replacement for surround sound or even close to the sound offered by a true surround sound system, then even the best sound bars fall really short.

Couldn't agree more. My cousin has the Yamaha soundbar with 42 drivers in it set up in an open room. I wasn't that impressed by it. He also has a $6k Pioneer Elite Kuro and doesn't even have a single HD signal being fed to it

I don't want to say I disagree you guys. But in the right environment and calibrated via the mic they sound pretty decent. Excellent alternative if you don't want to run/hide wires not to mention if you're under space constraints.

I have the Sony soundbar in my family room. The surround is non-existent but the sub hits pretty nicely. It's wayyyy better than the TV and the HDMI switching is great. Mine supports TrueHD/DTS-HD if you're going the BD route. Plus I got it for $200 on sale so it was win/win.

I've installed and calibrated many Yamaha YSP soundbars in rooms ranging from small with 4 equal walls to large open rooms with sloped ceilings. None of them are that immpressive. They will give you a minimal surround effect. Better then a tv speaker, no doubt, but nothing compared to a true surround sound system. I try to steer people away from them. There are instances when you cannot help it, like in a high rise condo.
