Question for the peeps that have satellite in snowy climates

How does the snow impact your dish reception?

Do you have to clean off the dish when you get heavy snow?

How does snow differ from rain fade?

My neighbor has satellite that goes out whenever it snows. I hooked up his cable for him a month ago and you would have thought I gave him a bag of money. He was so happy to have tv that works.

There are people here who say they have no issues. Around here, people lose their signal. I have had customers ask me if there is anything they could do because it annoys them. I just tell them to get cable if it bothers them that much.

Does snow ever accumulate on the surface of the dish?
If so, does it effect the reception?

Do you get any "snow/rain fade" during heavy snow?
...or does rain fade occur because the rain bounces off the surface of the dish..thus disrupting the signal?

Why so many discrepancies among reports? I wish there were a definitive answer.

It's getting harder to contemplate switching from Cable now that TimeWarner has added so many HD channels.

We have Direct TV (satellite) and no issues, living in WI and having over 80 inches of snow this winter has caused no problems at all

we have direct tv up north (cable is not available). haven't had any issues with snow or rain. for the internet we use wild blue. they are an affiliate of dtv, but they use a seperate dish. the service fro that goes out once in a while during heavy snow. not very often though.

Yes it does sometimes accumulate. But it doesn't affect anything.

Since upgrading to the new HD dish, rain/snow fade has been less of an issue. I think this dish is much better aimed.

The people who are having issues IMHO, suffer from shitty dish alignments. You may experience an outage due to rain/snow, but it's really not something that is realized all that much.

Thanks for the info...it appears that snow fade/ rain fade has more to do with poor dish alignment than it does the elements themselves.

I have cable, TW(home) and Dish Network(cottage). The dish is aligned about as perfect as its ever going to get(and i check it every year. Im good friends with the local high end audio/visual store and used to install them for them and they still let me use their signal equipment) Though we have the shitty "super dish" and have local channels and its getting signal from 2 or 3 satellites and its hard to get them to all have maximum. I need to upgrade to their HD receivers and dish

If i could choose to get rid of the dish at the cottage i would in a heart beat. When there are heavy rains it will go out (also depends on how big the storm is to the south) and in the winter i have to on occasion to clean the dish off so that it gets signal.

I love TW service (at least around here) and they are expanding their HD lineup and from what i read (here) it should get better when every thing goes HD/digital

Wild blue is good, Getting someone to service it is not. We have it at our cottage for Internet as well due to no other option available. I may try out a verizon wireless card for internet this summer.
