First off, wrong forum.

Second, that's a shitty buy. I've seen Xbox HD-DVD drives go much cheaper than that.

Besides, you can get the Toshiba A3 HD-DVD player with the same free movies promotion for $180.

I still don't have an HDTV, so can you see a noticeable difference between an 1080i and 1080p? I've heard most all HD brodcasts are 1080i, so I've never seen a 1080p player on a 1080p television.

TV signals are not broadcast in 1080p yet; they are only 720p or 1080i. For now, only HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is capable of giving 1080p via HDMI. From VCR->DVD there was a big difference. From SD->HD there isnt a major difference. Most people cannot tell the difference between SD vs HD.

More resolution makes a big difference on an HD set. It's even possible to tell the difference on an old CRT.

Strangely, I agree with your second statement. Still, when people make this comment I usually check their eyes for cataracts or glaucoma.

Better deal... Wal-Mart will be selling the HD-A2 (virtually the same as the A3) for $98.87 this Friday only.

You're a donkey if you're still making excuses for not owning an HD player.

That's even cheaper than a Xbox 360 w/ a HD-DVD drive! I see a bright future for HD-DVD.

Sorry, but even at $99 I still refuse to give either side my money until the market becomes clearer. For me it's not about the cost of the hardware. It's about spending money on content that I might not be able to watch in the future.

ok a few minor questions...

1) Is the xbox 360 hd-dvd drive 1080p?
2) So not all HD-DVD drives are 1080p? I thought HD-DVD specifically meant 1080p, but I suppose there's a 720p HD-DVD and then there's 1080p HD-DVD?

Reason I ask is because I just bought my 1st HDTV (1080p), and I want to get a 1080p HD-DVD, so I figured my best bet was an xbox 360 (I prefer that over PS3) with the optional HD-DVD drive. Thanks for your input.

Unless you play some games, then buy the Xbox 360 w/ a HD-DVD drive. But if you barely play game, I would get the Toshiba A2 HD-DVD drive that is on sale tomorrow. As far as I know all HD-DVD movie are 1080p. What kind of video output you use determine what kind of picture you will get (HDMI, Component, or DVI). The best picture you can get is HDMI because it carry both video and audio signal and it output at 1080p.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that it will only output 1080p if your TV support it. If not, you will be watching it on 720p/1080i.

The existance of an HDMI connection between two devices does not in any way guarantee what type of signal will be going over that bus.

I don't know of many players that are only 720p. There are some (like the ones mentioned here) that output at a maximum of 1080i, however if your TV can do 3:2 pulldown / inverse telecine 1080i virtually becomes identical to 1080p.

The resolution is the same. If you have a good processor, the image quality will be the same as well.

In other words 1080i60 can be converted to 1080p24 with little or no sacrifice.
