So ya, it should work. But it'll be a compromise.
Maybe someone will write a exchange connector
For me, it wouldn't matter. I'd use it for personal use anyway...

I guess it all depends on how this device is viewed; a la business versus personal. And I think we all know where that'll go.

Until someone can say for sure how well the touchscreen works or doesn't. We're just guessing, Apple is claiming to use a new technology for input. So maybe they did it right? But from every other touch screen I have ever used, they all sucked for button/keyboard input.

i'm really disappointed in the Apple TV. granted it's bringing some basic tech to the masses, but i was really hoping for a pro-sumer level device.
this thing isn't doing a single thing my Xbox + Connect360 can't do.
granted, it's doing it smoother, cleaner, easier, and sexier. but it's not at all revolutionary IMO.
no multi-channel audio? are you kidding me?

everyone with something to say about touch screen (besides not being able to "feel" buttons of course) should really take a look at the Keynote video or watch some of the videos on apple.com.
amazing stuff.
amazing stuff.
should be noted from the keynote Jobs makes a solid point of the fact that Apple is commited to the "GSM roadmap" and they'll have some 3G phones in the future.
like i said, there will be no CDMA from Apple. i'm confident of that.

I looked at some of the videos... cool shit! Too bad I'm afraid to use Cingular though. It's also too bad that it's not releasing until June. I need a new phone now
yeah, the june thing bugs me too. it was hard enough waiting for this conference to buy a new phone, now i gotta wait another 6 months. argh.
personally im glad its coming through Cingular, it's who i planned to switch to anyway. my fiance has had cingular for years and has better coverage then i do on Sprint (and my Sprint coverage isnt all that bad).
im sure its diff for diff regions

I think is a shame that the email client is going to be weak compared to blackberry.
They should have partnered with Goodlink. That would have competed nicely with the Blackberry.
I like the phone but I see a couple of problems.
1. Not up to par with blackberry as far as email functionally.
2. To take advantage of many of the cool features of this phone one will need a dataplan. How many non business users are willing to pony up for a data plan every month?

interesting...makes me start to wonder if this is something I can really afford, or warrant a purchase....I'm assuming that my cell phone bill would double from its current $44 state to near $100 due to a necceary data plan. That's a lot of recurring expense.
I dont have anything but a hunch to back this up, but I think the exclusivity to Cingular is perhaps because this is a VoIP phone. Using the data network would be the easiest way to provide features like the visual voicemail, call merge, etc. Many of the carriers shudder at the idea of adding that much data to their networks, but with Apple on the same team, it can only mean $ that would help drive the infrastructure to handle the data. If I am on the right track an "unlocked" phone wont work with other carriers resulting in true exclusivity.
If that is the case I see a slow deployment in Canadian markets - our stupid regulatory agencies get in the way of progress anytime you try something different.

guys, stop assuming Apple wants to be everything to everyone.
Apple isn't Apple by following that strategy. They have a cult following and keep their core users passionate by appealing to them. This phone appeals to APPLE USERS. I almost think Apple reads my IM's because just last night I was reading off the list of EVERYTHING I wanted in the iPhone and sure enough Apple delivered on EVERY point in an uncanny fashion.
Job's said CLEARLY in the keynote that they're looking for only 1% market share. Only 1% of the mobile business, only 10 million units. Do you really think they're looking for enterprise customers here? Does Apple ever try to appeal to enterprise users? Does Apple Mail or Apple iWork look like something made for enterprise users?
Apple is not Microsoft. Guys with ties are not their customers.
Apple appeals to savvy consumers, creatives, and small business professionals. That's who Apple targets with all of their products, that's who their targetting with the iPhone, and that's exactly who will buy all 10 million units Apple puts out this year.
This is not meant to replace Dilbert's blackberry.

"buttons change" for every application, every activity, every "instance".
not having fixed buttons means theres nothing generic in the interface, everything is custom tailored.
it does have a QWERTY keyboard, but only in the few instances you need it.
if it's not for you, it's not for you.
as a ui designer myself, this gets an A+ for execution as it's exactly what i would design for myself.
ive also gotta add, i don't expect it to be perfect, but i don't assume it's the end of the road either. it's a first gen product, and we all know how apple just loves to innovate. they'll have a 2G iPhone out before you can use up your roll over minutes.
you don't buy an Apple product and expect it to be the newest and the coolest for long. not because Apple's competition will one-up you, but because Apple themselves will.
it can be frustrating. nobody likes spending thousands of dollars on a new product only to have another new product come out in 3 months.
but you have to put it in perspective. just because your product is the old hotness doesn't mean it's not still hotness. apple's products age well despite their inkling for hyper-breeding.
if youre the type of person who just wants to have the latest & greatest at all times (even if what you've got is already later & greater then anything the competition offers) then you should be prepared to pay to play with Apple.

yeah, i think i'll wait for the 2nd generation and let the early adopters work out all the bugs

Plus, last night I realized that my parents have Cingular. For some reason I thought they switched to Verizon when they moved down... but they did not. So they've been using Cingular and have no problems with service neither here, or when they visit NY. So that is a good sign.

Pretty weird. But yeah, I don't see any reason why you can't get a new Cingular phone now... then just get the iPhone and renew the contract. I did that several times with Verizon. I am actually going to look into this myself when I swing by Best Buy later today...

I guess it depends where you are at, in CA Cingular is by far the best in my experience
With all the road trips adri and I have done cross country, and all the remote spots we've hit. i've been far more reliable then her T-mobile or old verizon.
i can also coun't the calls i've dropped in the last 5 years w/ my hand
