Home theater in a box

Are any of the HTIB systems for under $1000 good? Any reocmmendations?

I'm not an audiophile, I just want a decent 5.1 system. I've read a couple of good reviews for Onkyo HTIB systems.

Suggestions?

I've had good luck in that price range with Cambridge Soundworks.

Bought the system about 4 years ago and it's been great for me (I know there are better systems out there for true audiophiles, but for the occasional movie watcher, this system rocks!). I compared it against some Sony and Bose systems at the time. Didn't like the Sony at all (even though I generally love Sony) and the Cambridge system sounded the same to my ears as the Bose...... for about 1/2 the price.

I'm too lazy to look up your Tweeter thread. How much was it (just for the sound system)?

The Tweeter thread had my new stuff, not the Yahama. The Yahama was about $500

Most of them are pretty good for apts or small rooms.

I have a sony 5.1 set up that was like on sale for 400 3 years ago. receiver, dvd, speakers, sub etc.

Most brands are good Sony, Onkyo, Yamaha...

Cambridge used to make some really cool stuff. I don't know how I feel about them now that they are owned by Creative Labs.

I picked up a Yamaha YHT-160 for around $270 a week ago and it sounds amazing given the price. The reviews were great and I figured at that price I couldn't really go wrong. Lots of features and only a few real drawbacks (multiple component and digital fiber/coax outputs, but no S-VIDEO? Remote sucks but not a big deal since I also picked up a Harmony H659).

Athena speakers are highly reccomended by many

Athena Micra 6 + a reciever should set you back ~700

You can go components too for less than 1000

I WAS going to get the following, before i started reading avs forum threads...
Athena AS-B1 (2 pair; $99/each)
Athena AS-C1 (center; $99)
Athena p4000 sub ($300; you can replace it with something cheaper)
Panasonic XR55K (~$220)

Less than $1000 after adding cables of your choice

With a $1,000 budget, you have a number of options, not just HITB setups. Were you needing a DVD player to go with it, or just the receiver/spearkers? For that price range, the Onkyo, Sony, Polk, Infiniti systems seem to be the most common routes. I spent quite a bit more(being a novice audiophile), so I'm not exactly an authority on that range.

i bought a sony dav-c770 a while ago and had a few problems with it, generally i would say it sucks....

HTIB are nice as starter systems (or second systems for bed rooms and such), but i would rather go the route and buy a nice receiver and then get the components i needed.

I second Athena,..they make some good stuff. They dont make the stuff I have anymore,...but you can go see it on the website if you go to products, classic products,...and pick the SCT series. I have a pair of the S2 speakers and the P2 subs,....they attach together to make big floorstanding speakers. These things KICK ASS. I would highly recommend this company. I think they might have been taken over though, but I assume they still would make good quality stuff. In any event, I can still get some of the SCT series that I have online,.......soon I will have another pair of the S2's as my rears,.......then I am buying the AS-C1.2 (audition series) center,........ownage.

I dont know how good the Micra 6 system is, but I would assume it is pretty good.

I got huge deals (bought at right time) on my stuff,...........410 Canadian (reg 500 when in stores) on the S2's,........and 640 for both P2's (reg 500 EACH).

Unrelated,.......my stupid Kenwood receiver crapped out (something is wrong anyway) so I am prob gonna have to get a new receiver. I planned to do this anyway, but I have to wait cause I dont have tons of money to drop on this stuff right now.
