HDMI and TV question/issue

I just got a 46" samsung LCD. Im trying to get it all hooked up, Every thing works great with component video hooked up, but when trying to use HDMI HD channels work great, but the min i leave HD programing i get no picture. The TV is showing "Not Supported Mode" I have Time Warner with a 8300hd box. Im assuming its a cable box issue. I talked to TW and they troubleshooted everything over the phone and the issue is still unresolved. I have an appt for them to come out tomorrow and look.
I was just checking to see if its something i have to set up differently or if its a cable box issue?

is your cable box set to output 480i/480p in addition to the HD outputs? When mine first came I had the same problem b/c my box was only set to output 1080i/720p. As soon as I added 480p/480i to the list it was fine on the regular channels...

TimeWarner sucks so much cock.

It took over a week, 4 visits, 3 phone calls, kicking a supervisor out, etc etc etc, before they were finally able to get my fiancees internet up and running at her new condo.

Funny thing was, while they were giving me attitude and saying it wasnt them and not wanting to listen to me...in the end I was right all along.

Many other in the building have had issues with them, too. If they werent the only ones in teh area with a contract (which is also included in my fiancees HoA dues, so no extra bill) I would have dumped them. I did with their phones service when I found out there was another company offering an analog line.

Anway, point being....make sure you know more then they do (not hard) and do not take any shit from them.

^ They do suck. I think they all suck though.

Whenever I have a problem I just go to the mall and swap out the box and do everything myself. I usually try to get them involved as little as possible. I'll call service and have them check stuff, but if that doesn't work I just swap everything out on my own.

Oh and BTW, the example I gave above... I was the one that figured it out. I was on the phone with support and all they did was send downloads to the box. We setup an appointment for the next day, but that night I was messing with the menu and saw the Output options. Changed that which fixed it, then cancelled the appointment...

juniorbean, Yes the cable box is set to 480, 720 and 1080 as well.

TW has been great for me here. My parents never had issues, and since ive been the house owner ive never had issues with them. Any time there has been a problem they are quick to resolve. Now Dish Network on the other hand at my cottage try getting something resolved in any timely manner = not happening

You need to ship that tv to NJ. They don't work in WI.

I try and do it all myself as well. But with my issue, they were the only ones who could actually fix the problem...that I was trying to tell them, but they never wanted to admit it was there problem to being with. It was finally a teir 3 technician on the phone who would listen to me and got it all resolved.

And kicking the area supervisor out my house for a being total cock didn't win me any points with builder But you don't walk into another persons home as a service provider and give attitude and then make accusations, fuck you, youre gone.

It appears there are issues with the new boxes(4250) they are handing out as well. Having to reboot it and manually changing it to 1080 every time you power it back on.

My 46" Samsung LCD will show that error message if the resolution on my DirecTV receiver is not set to 720, 1080 or native resolution. Your cable box should be able to convert the signal by some similar mechanism if it supports HDMI. Sounds like it's blocking SD (480).

Maybe try "native" if that's an option?

I didn't know that was possible. SD is 480 resolution so you need that displayed at its native resolution or converted to at least 720 by your cable box if you choose HDMI.

In the actual setup of the box, you can select which outputs to have it use.

I tried it and still nothing. It has to be a cable box issue. But after some of the things ive read im kinda loosing hope

I think you're right. Typically you choose which output is the greatest your TV will handle (1080) and it will accept and convert the rest.

Just another reason Time Warner blows. even though it wasn't directly their fault. They still eat a dick.

i dont think they blow... They came out when they were supposed to and resolved the issue with the cable box promptly. I refuse to use DTV or Dish. I have to put up with it at my cottage and absolutely hate it.

I have Time Warner and the SA 4250HD. I don't think any of the SA boxes worked properly via HDMI until they sent a firmware update in mid November. I can now view HD channels with HDMI, but they're grainy and still look better through component.

Scientific Atlanta is a customer of the company I work for and they have several boxes, (i.e. Explorer 8455 Virgin, 8455 Cisco, and several 8KG4 and 8KG5 models) all of which are HD recievers.

Time Warner seems to only carry a hand full of them.

I deal with the 4250HD's on a near daily basis with zero issues like this. This is with Cablevision. It sounds like possibly Time Warner does not have boxes with a newer firmware perhaps.

I think you're right, there seems to be issues only with Time Warner.

My Dad just bought a VIZIO GV47L. I hooked it up for him yesterday. I could not get any sound with the HDMI cable through the cable box. The literature says it should work fine. The sound worked fine with HDMI in the DVD player. The sound also works with the component cable and RCA cable combo. Think it's the box? he has TW cable.

sorry for hijacking the thread. just didn't wanna start an new thread w/ a similar issue.

Check in the box settings. there is a setting (atleast on mine) for the audio to be in HDMI

I was lucky and got another 8300 HD box. Pic is flawless with it. I was worried about having a 4250 after reading all the stuff on AVS

Luck shouldn't have anything to do with it. The 8300 is a DVR while the 4250 is not. You must have ordered DVR service in order to get the 8300.

ya i had to do a hard reboot (press and hold power for 5 sec, after 5 sec (still holding power) unplug the unit for 5 sec, plug it back in and let it go thru its cycle (about 10 min)) and the setting came back. I also added a 250GB SATA harddrive.

i can't find the link where I go the info. that sucks cuz there was lots of other cool shit on there. i will keep looking.
