Goodbye Harmony (possibly)

I'm amazed that Logitech has been able to hang in there. They have been around a very long time selling simple little gadgets.

I don't know why the hate for the Harmony. Is there a better consumer level programmable remote? I don't know of one.

I don't like the touch screen on the one. It provides litle to no feedback and pretty easy to hit the wrong command. I would prefer real buttons like the lower level harmonys have.

My Harmony One is nearly 5 years old now...and its just not starting to show its age...still works. But I think it might be on borrowed time.

My Harmony 520 has sorta worked, but gets flaky ever so often.
Tried upgrading the F/W and no improvements.

I had a customer who we installed a system for about two years ago with a Harmony remote that they supplied. Forget which model. All was well until I sent a guy who I had working for me to install a Sonos system, which required a slight reprogram of the remote. He couldn't get into the software and had to program from scratch. Not the biggest deal as a monkey could program them. Well, this monkey didn't account for the fact that the DVR buttons (DVR, Record, Live...) are not on the remote when you select a DVR as your model. Yeah, you have to go in and manually add DVR buttons to a DVR codeset. Brilliant.
So I had to go back and fix the issue for the client. Got on site, pull out computer, go to log in, Logitec's site was down. Wasted trip. If Harmony goes, I hope the door doesn't hit them on the way out.

The sizzle in the Steak
On my second Harmony One. First one was dropped and the lcd screen was ruined.
Logitech replaced it under warranty.
My Harmony One works like a champ. No issues.
My old Harmony 880 worked flawlessly for years, until the volume down button stopped working...but this was after many years of use.
Harmony remotes are great.

The Box
I have a 4 year old (refurbished) 890 and a 4 or 5 year old Harmony One, both work great. The 890 just needs special treatment when being put on the charger to make sure it gets a charge.

I'm just now starting to look at these for my system.
If not a Harmony, what is recommended? Kinda speaking directly at you 2001AudiS4.

I think the many happy customers trump the one annoyed professional installer.

If you are willing to take the time to learn how to program the remote and not use a wizard, then I'd recommend a URC remote. Much more reliable, lasts longer, much more customization and control. Software is distributed at the discretion of your dealer, so keep in mind that not all dealers will hand the software out. I can help you if you'd like.

Needs more Lemon Pledge
Only issue i have ever had with my One is that the battery swelled up and stopped taking a charge after a couple of years. Ebay, new battery, all is good.
I am sure the Harmony remotes will be available for a while, and hopefully someone will come along ans swoop them up and carry on the tradition of easy to use/program consumer all in one remotes.
I certainly don't want to have to get up and grab a cell phone or tablet just to change the channel, although with TV/PC integration I certainly see a place for a low cost Android based remote with on screen keyboard, apps, etc...
