Finally bit the bullet...

Even though I had no intentions of getting one now, the wife actually left the Best Buy flyer out for me yesterday, and when I came out for breakfast says... "Your Sammy TV is on sale this week, and they have 0% financing until Jan. 2010."

So, after breakfast we went to Best Buy and scooped up the 61" Sammy 1080p DLP. During breakfast I was doing a bunch of reading b/c I was torn with the Mitsu and Sammy, but wasn't thrilled with what I read with this model Mitsu, plus it was ~$550 more and we love our Sammy's... so we just stuck with them. Unfortunately they were out of stock, but they gave me free delivery, so it will be here next week.

When we were driving home I said, sweet, now I can get a PS3 and use 1080p to its fullest. Just got the look of death at that point and she said, don't push it. She knew I was joking b/c right now I don't want a PS3, but even though I was joking... she wasn't, so I just kept my mouth shut about that. hehe.

I am looking forward to playing my 360 on it though...

She plays hardball, but is very good about putting up with my electronic product fetish/sickness.

Nice pickup! I thought you already had a gigantor HDTV already? Did you just buy this one for 1080p?

Pretty much. We have a 50" in the great room now... so the 61" will go here and the 50" will be moved up to the bonus room and used more as a theater setup. Only reason the 61" is going downstairs is that it is our main TV, and even though the bonus room is longer, the actual sitting distances are larger in the great room, so that's where the bigger TV will go.

Congrats JB. Is this the model that doesn't use a bulb? Or are those not out yet?

You'll need more giant tv's for your 8000 sq ft house. So keep picking more when they are on sale. I am sure the wife won't mind

So I popped Superman Returns into the 360 just to see how it looked. (first time I've watched a DVD via the 360) Couldn't believe how much better it looked than through my 5 year old DVD player. And it was bigger on screen as well. The widescreen black bars on top and bottom were half the size.

Don't they usually charge a $50-$100 "admin" fee? They usually do that up here on those types of deals. Thats why I prefer to just pay for it.

As danny posted, only the 56" uses the LED light engine (currently).

I honestly got sick of waiting for the technology to jump to the larger sets, and with the financing BB is offering, couldn't pass it up. Plus, we have a 50" Sammy DLP so I have experience with Sammy and their DLP's, and so far, it's been awesome, so we didn't really feel we were taking a big risk by not waiting for an LED light engine set.

Nope, never heard of such a thing...

Funny enough I did the same thing this weekend. And yes, the DVD looked soooo much better on the 360 then it did on my DVD player, which is only about 2-3 years old.

hehe. Well, we decided against building that house for now, so we're just going to fill this house up with TV's (which I think we've done b/c we have 8 right now of varying sizes and technologies)

^ hehe, yeah, that's why I did this... . I'm telling you, it's a sickness.

Basically, every room has one except my office (or I'd never get any work done), the formal living room and the dining room. We even have one for the garage...

Mind you I have 5. Although 2 of those are 13 inchers which aren't even plugged in. My 36" Sony CRT has been turned on once since we got the Sammy. What a waste. Maybe I'll move a 13 incher to the garage.

Your dvd player is not setup for a 16:9 tv. If you turn on the dvd player, and make sure there are no discs in there, go into the dvd players setup menu. Look around, it is either under video or some other option. Set the player for 16:9 widescreen tv. If you have it plugged in via components, you should also set it for progressive scan while you are in there, if it is a progressive scan player.

How do you get the 0%, and how long does it last? Is it valid on a Best Buy card? I'm very interested in a Samsung 26" for the bedroom.

i hooked it up for a few minuted since we got back late. we have regular cable tv so the pic was about the same as our old panny crt.

but the pic was really stretched out, i hope we don't have to watch tv like this all the time

you can watch it pillar boxed in 4:3 if you'd like. or you can use the "wide zoom" or "zoom" feature of your TV/cablebox to stretch the picture to fill the screen while maintaining the aspect ratio, thus cropping the top & bottom of the picture slightly.

i did find that feature
when i was reading the book,(when all else fails its the last thing i turn to)
it said not to keep it in 4:3. i wasnt sure if it would be harmful to the set if i did that.
at least i have the whole day to fuck with it

you can't harm your LCD by keeping it in 4:3 pillarboxed.

if you had a CRT or Plasma, you could suffer burn in. but you don't, LCD is not susceptible to burn-in.

awesome, thanks.
i was watching dvd's and couldnt figure out why the pic was a bit grainy, i had to change the settings on the dvd player to 16:9. i need to get a new dvd player to get dvi connections.

the guy at best buy mentioned a line conditioner to get a clearer pic with cable.
we do not subscribe to hd programming and watch standard cable.
are these good at all for getting a clearer pic?

HDMI connections you mean.

I'm sure they do something, although I can't say as I haven't watched non-digital cable since 1999 or so

tried to get bb to price match my set to cc price of 1299 - 10% coupon bringing the price down to 1240.
so i bought the set from cc for $ 1240 compared to 1525 @ bb. and i will return the bb set once the cc one comes in
