DVD Up converter help

SO I have owned a 40 inch Phillips LCD TV for about 4 months now. I got a matching Phillips DVD player and Up converter today, and HDMI cable. Came home and played pineapple express and the results were way less than I expected. During HD gaming and HD cable, this TV really performs well, but it did not really look much different than a regular DVD. Any suggestions?

youre taking lower res and trying to make it higher res..what kind of results were you expecting?

most upconverting players are shit. The Xbox360 is the best I've seen so far via the HD-DVD player add-on.

My sammy bluray does an Ok job.

But its never going to look amazing.

Agree w/Sarlac.

I purchased 2 Oppos (well regarded upconverter dvds) last xmas for our two large HDTVs and while they look good, they are never going to be confused with Bluerays by a trained eye. But considering that I got 2 Oppos for the price of a 1 good Blueray, it was worth it to me.

I've got an Oppo too, but I got it for the plethora of formats it will play (DVD, SACD, DVD-A, PhotoCD, CD, etc...). The upconvert was a bonus but I didn't expect miracles from it.

My Toshiba HD-DVD player does a really good job at upconverting to 720P, but if your tv is 1080P then dunno...

+1 to what everyone else has said. I have an Oppo 981 and for 3/4 of the stuff I ever compared, there was no visible difference between letting the player upconvert to 1080p vs. letting my TV do it.

Which is doing the upconversion, the DVD player or the TV? You may want to switch it around to see if there is any improvement. Chances are that your TV may do a better job of upconverting. If thats the case then set the output of your DVD player to 480p or 720p and let the TV's software to do upconvert. Also, you may try 480p or 720p over component cables instead of HDMI. I've read that it makes a difference in some setups.
