Directv + HDTV + Tivo

Somebody please explain to me how this would work. I currently have an HDTV and I currently have a Tivo with DirecTV. I want to get my local channels in HDTV. Would I just have to buy an antenna? Do I need a new HDTV rcvr? What exactly would I need?

I don't really want to get a new dish to get the local channels because I would have to pay for the new dish and installation and then going through DTV I would have to pay $10.99/month for HD channels. Is it possible to get my local channels in HD through an antenna and still record to tivo?

What kind of TV do you have? Does it have a built-in HD Receiver? If so, you can just add an antenae and connect it directly to your TV to get the HD channels. I'm not sure you can connect it to your DTivo, and if you could, you certainly won't be able to record in HD.

I have DTV with HDTV and Tivo. Getting the local channels depends on what market your in. So, for instance since im in the LA market, I get all the local channels, plus the 4 majors in HD.

If you want HD programming through DTV, you will have to buy the receiver. There is the regular HD receiver and there is the HD Tivo receiver, which costs a bit more. If you buy either, usually the new dish is included (Oval dish, 3 LNB). If you just use an antenna, you wont be able to record HD on your SD tivo.

DTV's HD quality is excelent and its well worth the $11 a month. You get about 10 or 11 HD channels, and the list will keep growing...

A quick search of the model brought me there. According do that site I would have to connect an optional receiver/decoder.

When the guy came out to install the dish - he told me that I can't get HD because there are trees blocking the signal.

So what options do I have?

I really think thats BS. If you can get a DTV signal now, you should be able to get the HD signal. But you will need a new dish for it.

Roof top antenna, or switch to cable.

Is Verizon FIOS due in your area?

That's what I thought, but he said not a chance. Something about the signal not being strong enough. He had somethign or other connected to the dish when he was positioning it.

Well, the 3 LNB dish picks up 3 different satellites, so their may be some truth to that. He was probably using a signal finder. I dunno, seems with satellite, you either get a good connection or you dont get one at all.

I checked the website and it can't even find my address....it's not like I live in the middle of nowhere. OTOH, Verizon doesn't have local service here.
