Direct TV download blocking HDMI

Just wanted to throw this out there and see if anybody else having same problem.

Last night DTV d/l an update 0x2021 to both of my H20 boxes. Both of them now move slower in the menus have a different font. And the one hooked up to HDMI cable is now blocked by DTV, has sound but no picture. DTV blue screen comes up and says paraphrasing: programming is restricted with your HDMI connection to the Direct Receiver. They both tried to tell me that the H20 has problems with HDMI, I've never had a problem with it until the d/l last night.

I was one the phone with DTV for over an hour, the have no clue!!! She kept telling there was no d/l last night. B/S I was awake when it was happening to the H20 in my bedroom.

I was going to try and take a picture but I can't get anything on the HDMI source from my TV. Now hooked back up to components, and it looks like shit.

DirecTV update made your DVR worse!?!?!?!
SHOCKER!!!!

DVR updates from DTV have a history of being bad.
from the HR15 to the HR20. Sometimes it would be better if they left well enough alone....and they are very very slow at updating their software bugs and errors

^^ a good resource

There should be very little difference between component and HDMI in terms of video quality. Do you have bad cable? Or does your TV have a real shitty video decoder on it's component input? Or perhaps the DTV box has a shitty encoder (RAMDAC) for the component output. They should look nearly identical to the eye given good quality components & cables.

HDMI does have a slight edge as it will be a bit sharper, but nothing night and day like you are describing. And only someone with a good eye will be able to see it... especially at normal TV viewing distances.

The picture just has much more vibrance with HDMI the component cables. I'd say it's the H20 and not my SXRD. After watching the direct antenna feed this past weekend, DTV's HD lite is about out the window. Verizon just dropped fiber in the common areas here. A month or so Fios in here. I was going to wait because of NFL Sunday ticket, but maybe not now.

You probably need to calibrate your component input. Each input has it's own video settings on the Sony SXRD TV(s)... This is pretty normal and to be expected in the analog world. Once you get it setup it'll look better. Who knows how the DTV box is sending it out; might need a lot of adjustment. But again, you shouldn't have to be doing this... HDMI > component and you should be able to use it.

Ya, I ditched DTV awhile ago for Time warners cable. I don't miss it...

Yeah, I made some adjustments after remembering this, Thanks

DTV called me back trying to tell me is was my Sony HDMI or the HDMI cable I'm using. The tech geeks are throwing out an update without leaving in the old standards. eff them Fios I'm coming.

Moog, thanks for the link, it looks like the 2021 force update they did with me is messing things up for a few people. At least the one that now of the website. I wonder how many more there are who don't know where to talk about it.

Can't they ever get this shit right? The HR20 was having all sorts of issues and I got fed up reading through all the issues and abandoned the thought of getting one.

Recently I thought of picking up a H20 for the bedroom and a plasma. Guess I'll wait a bit longer.
