looking for something decent and not too pricey. I have a Yamaha stereo but I hate the receiver. So I will keep the Yamaha speakers & sub and link to this one.

it's do able... I mean it's $155
If you're just going to keep the Yamaha speakers, which I assume they're from a "home-theater-in-a-box" package... then this receiver is fine... but if you plan on upgrading the speakers... then maybe get something better. How loud do you watch movies?

How loud do you watch movies?I did see a Yamaha rec + Polk speakers but that was $1,200 by the time the dust settles.
Yeah. I will keep the Yamaha speakers.

What are you going to plug to the Pioneer?
Do you need to plug a bunch of craps to this Pioneer? The VSX-517 only has 3 set of plugs in the back.
I have a VSX-816. It sounds ok but not as good as others that cost 3x more. But for the price, Pioneer is fine.

I can't recommend a receiver that doesn't support TrueHD/DTS-HD codecs. Even Sony bars that support them are $200. If you don't have a Blu-Ray player yet, you'll be getting one in the next year.
