Those prices are horrible compared to TX. 240K will put you in a 2000-2500 sq ft on .25 acre new build in Dallas/FW (on average, there are high and low areas in every urban area)

Bought 3rd house in 2002 (condo) in Roseville, CA for $210,000. 900 sq ft w/attached 1 car
Bought 4th house in 2004 in Houston for $320,000. 3500+ sq ft.
Bought 5th house in 2006 in Montgomery, TX for $180,000. 2,300 sq ft.
All of these houses were brand new and I got to customize them.

Gutted the master bathroom, its small but gets the job done in the morning new tile and all new appliances, fixtures, door knobs, just recently all windows replaced with dual pane. new furnace complements of the home warrenty, all new toliets thanks to them as well. and this summer the AC is bound to go out

Pulled a Soopa and gutted the whole house
. But worth it. UNLIKE him, i payed someone to do it. Didn't have the patience or the time.
I have a big 2.5 car detached garage.
It is strategically located next to 3 major highways.
Very happy.

Northern Virginia might as well be a state. There are all kinds of different areas that you do and don't want to be in.
My first purchase was a

but technically I bought my current home first (money down in 04)
800 sq ft 1 bed / 1 bath +den in Arlingotn, VA near EFC metro
$387K with one garage space @ $20K (ouch!)

Where in NoVA are you buying? Seems awfully cheap for the area unless it's some shitty part of town.

That isn't bad at all (for CA). I've seen some ridiculous prices for one bed one bath places recently.

Single income, 2006/754sq/294k/200 monthly HOA here in good ol fairfax. The place is brand new though.

its 30mins. south of fairfax in a nice place called Warrenton. I work in fairfax so the commute isnt bad at all

first was in 2003. I paid $180,000 for my 960 sq. ft. 2 bed 1 bath house on a 14,000 sq. ft. lot. The property also had a 1080 sq. ft. 2 story insulated/heated shop.
I sold that home in 2005 for $240,000.
I've bought 3 more homes since then. all brand new.
this last one that I'm currently living in I just bought for $253,000. It appraised at $350,000.
