California may ban incandescent light bulbs:

California may ban conventional lightbulbs by 2012

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California lawmaker wants to make his state the first to ban incandescent lightbulbs as part of California's groundbreaking initiatives to reduce energy use and greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

The "How Many Legislators Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb Act" would ban incandescent lightbulbs by 2012 in favor of energy-saving compact fluorescent lightbulbs.

"Incandescent lightbulbs were first developed almost 125 years ago, and since that time they have undergone no major modifications," California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine said on Tuesday.

"Meanwhile, they remain incredibly inefficient, converting only about 5 percent of the energy they receive into light."

Levine is expected to introduce the legislation this week, his office said.

If passed, it would be another pioneering environmental effort in California, the most populous U.S. state. It became the first state to mandate cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, targeting a 25 percent reduction in emissions by 2020.

Compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) use about 25 percent of the energy of conventional lightbulbs.

Many CFLs have a spiral shape, which was introduced in 1980. By 2005, about 100 million CFLs were sold in the United States, or about 5 percent of the 2-billion-lightbulb market, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

A good move I believe, but I don't know what the input costs are to making the energy efficient bulbs i.e. does production require more energy to develop these bulbs than the energy saved by implementing these bulbs across CA?

I didn't see it addressed in the article whether the 2012 date is when you must stop manufacturing, selling or using incandescent bulbs.

This guy is crazy. The fluorescent is giving me headache. I am in the process of replacing all my fluorescent back to incandescent light bulbs.

I would imagine stop selling...even Cali would not be crazy enough to legislate something that they can't go door to door to inspect (stop using the bulbs)

I like the spirit behind the law, but I hate it when people try to legistate laws telling people what they can or can not do in their own home...

I love CFL's, but hate the CA law.... it's just stupid

And while in most cases, a CFL would be an adequate replacement, some fixtures/rooms require incandescent or halogen. Plus the fact that CFL+Dimmer doesn't work.

Not true...you can buy dimmable CFL's. I ordered some.

I have switched over most of our house to CFLs. I feel guilty using normal bulbs now. I am running my entire kitchen on the wattage of 1 indacescent light. That is crazy.

Whenever I buy new bulbs I get the fluorescent ones, but I think enacting a law requiring people to buy them is idiocy (or fascism).

CFL's save alot of energy amd money, but making laws that these laws to make these the only bulb to have in houses is overkill. They should have it some way so mor people use them, but not to a killer extent.

Good to know. I just haven't seen them. Where can you order them from.
