I have one from my electric company that installs at the meter, its a ring that goes around the base of it. Though I still use surge/strips on PC's and tv's.

Some of the panel manufacturers (like Siemens) make ones that go in a breaker slot right in your panel and come with a 15amp breaker. This way you connect some of your lights on the circuit and if the surge suppressor trips your lights go out to let you know you need to reset it.

As far as experience I have none - I havent installed one yet.

really easy... there are 4 wires... (2 black, white, green)... white and green go to the neutral/ground bar (my neutral and ground are bonded so it goes into the same bar)... then you need a 2-pole 20amp breaker for the two blacks... the directions say that the breakers should be installed closest to where the power comes in (to intercept any surges as early as possible)... for me that is topmost... so the hardest part for me was having to shift the line of breakers down to make room for it...

if you need any help, let me know... i didn't take any pictures with the panel open to show the wiring but i can...

I'm surprised that they don't cost more than what they do.

Wish I knew about this thread before the end of May when an electrical storm fried my A/C compressor.

An expensive lesson ($10,000) but I've got the Schneider Square D on the home, the rental, and my parent's house now. Install was really easy even for this non-electrician. I really recommend it.

see below... i also learned the hard way... i had lightning fry up my washing machine of all things... it was only a few hundred bucks but got me thinking about the more expensive items we have running in the house...

hmmm I have two panels in my garage but only one line coming into the house just ended up needing a second panel so I wonder if I would need just one of these? My garage is also finished so is this something I could put behind the beauty panel of the the breaker box as my full sized tool box and a full wall of pegboard are on that wall.

I believe you just need one on the main breaker box. The way they work is they monitor the voltage and when they detect a spike, they open a path directly to ground. Because all of the other paths involve tens of feet of wiring throughout your house, the electricity goes in the path of least resistance directly to ground. So one installed on your main breaker where the power comes into your house will protect everything downline including the second breaker box.
