Having some trouble getting straight answers on the internet. We are getting overwhelmed by websites, and are trying to hone in on brands. Some have recommended Hooker furniture, but that's all we have at the moment.
My wife really wants to get a super formal double pedestal mahogany dining table (well, a full set). An "heirloom type", but purchased new, that's high polished with wood banding on the table top, etc. I am pushing for Restoration Hardware to go more rustic, but have heard bad reviews on quality and longevity; and honestly, it just isnt what she is looking for.
Ultimately, we are comfortable spending on a set if we could keep for our lifetime, and eventually pass down. I looked on Ethan Allen, and the prices just seem too high for their stuff, which isnt as detailed as it should. Once you add on 8 chairs, and a chest or sideboard, you break10k, which we are trying to stay well under. Or maybe we are being unrealistic with our budget...
Also, does it make sense to wait until January? We have heard of big sales on January, but there are still year end sales lingering, so who knows.
Thanks.
here's a sample photo

i bought my dining room set here... it was a 3 hr drive out there... and they delivered it after it was built... each piece is marked with a serial number for future reference in case you need to order any replacements... is worth every penny... but you may need to think about your budget... we got table with a leaf, 6 chairs, a bench and a buffet cabinet... and i was close to 8k
If you can make a trip out of it you can check out a million brands at once by driving to Furniture Land South in North Carolina. I believe it is the largest single showroom of furniture in the country. They have a lot of high end stuff as well.

This is not bad at all for a custom built set including a buffet (which can often be $1k-$2k on its own. My non-custom set just table and 8 chairs was $3k.
sorry if I offend any one, but I heard this joke this weekend...
Jesus must have been a shitty carpenter. why didnt any one save his work?
do you think he critiqued the cross while up there? "hmmm, solid craftsmanship!"
The new heirloom type (high polished banded veneered mahogany; photo'd above) seems out of our budget. We went to many many places, and even Ethan Allen in person wasnt close to the quality table top we had in mind, and those were breaking big bucks. So we chalked it up to a lost cause. I guess those heirloom sets new are truthfully like 20k. Oh well. Looks like we are going to defer to Restoration Hardware for some more playful things. It is a work in progress, but I will keep you posted. This will involve some DIY paneling and molding while we wait for the order to be filled.

Why not DIY build one? If you're halfway good with tools and a tape measure, it's not all that difficult to build a table. A lot of the specialized tools are used to make the process go faster, not necessarily required.

I'd absolutely just buy the chairs though...
Lol.
Making a table like the one he shows requires a master of the craft. Those are getting few and far between as most furniture these days is mass produced.
If you truly want heirloom quality and the fancy look, I was going to suggest Hekman, but then you said under $10k. You can probably get either the fancy look or heirloom quality for that price, but I would be very surprised if you find both for that price range.

Like the one in the example? No.
One that looks good made out of solid wood? Totally possible.
I feel I am pretty handy but I would never be able to build a table like that. As for pricing, as you're seeing, furniture is insanely expensive. I remember my mom bought a beautiful china cabinet in the style you're looking for when I was a kid and it was on "sale" for $29K She does still have it and it looks great, not my style but holding up well.
As for RH, I had a bed from there and one from Z Gallerie, both fell apart but I was rough on the Z gallerie one during college and it wasn't nearly as pricey as the RH one. Good things are hard to find
Oh, for the life of me I thought you posted a card table the first few times I scrolled past post #3 ha The edge looks so odd for some reason but maybe it's the angle
We are starting to get in the RH items. Pretty nice thus far. Planning on kids next year. Probably best that we avoided going after the super formal set.
There are enough kid-friendly rooms that the living room and dining room could be off limits. The plan is really to furnish the house, DIY projects, and get settled first, while there is guilt-free cashflow and TIME.
