You can do a search here (seriously). We've covered the topic before. Scrib and Dfreder2 (Dave), have posted some stuff about their washers.

I'm a cheap bastard, so I got a sears kenmore (forget who actually makes those, I thought it was whirlpool), but I'm not sure... ahh... Someone here said the kenmores are made by whirlpool... http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load...245230962.html

More washer stuff in the Laundry Room forum (format sucks, but I like their tractor forum ):

Not cheap, but cheap to run. Has more computer power than my first PC. (I am old)

I would go Maytag. When I first came into the US, my ex mother-in-law had a set that was over 20 years old. Looked like crap but worked fine. So when we needed machines, we went Maytag as well. Mine are 9 years old now and still look/run like new. It can do a real big load and the drum is steel (not plastic). The new Maytags out are really nice but will keep mine until they break.

Go with the Maytags, IMHO.

Maytag > * ???

My parents have a Maytag washer and dryer... from 1984. The dryer just died, but the washer still works fine.

I don't think Maytag is as good as they used to be, but they still make a nice machine. My mom and my grandma both have older machines that have been running without incident forever.

Whatever you do, don't buy the Neptune TL - the top loader with the white flipper discs. It is a piece of crap and it took me forever to get them to take it back and exchange it for a different kind.

I've also head the Atlantis line is a waste of money. I bought my wife a set of the front loaders with the LCD touch panels and 7 year warrenties (they were relatively inexpensive)

It cost a lot for the set, but I know they will last at least 7 years without costing me another dime, plus with the screens, she has and programmed in favorites. Now I don't get blamed for running the loads wrong because all I do is push "towels", "whites", "darks", etc. She has it all setup the way she likes.

If you've got the cash, I definately recommend them.

I'm also in the market for a washer and dryer for a new house. My mother just so happens to work in the returns department of a high-end appliance store (family owned). You'd be surprised how cheap Sub-Zero fridges are on the inside...

3 brands are good for washers:

- Maytag
- Whirlpool
- Fisher & Paykal
- Kenmores (as long as they are Whirlpool manufactured)

Things to avoid at all costs:
- Front loaders. They still aren't perfectred yet and have seal problems.
- Fancy electronic crap on the panel. It's usually the first thing to go in 2-3 years. Get knobs.
- Plastic wash tubs. Unlike metal, they scratch. When they scratch they start tearing at your clothes inducing wear.
- Calypso wash motion. It breaks.

Fisher's washer is good, but their dryer is kinda crappy.

My personal faves are the Maytag Atlantis series, and the medium range Whirlpools (the two-tone ones).

Good luck!

Can't really advise on new models - I haven't had to think about buying washer/dryer for 12 years... which is ever since we bought our Maytags.

How about an LG brand? For $1700, they have a combo washer/dryer unit.
