Vacuum Recommendation

To make a long story short, the beater bar on my Dirt Devil Jaguar froze. One end of the beater bar is a little melted and I I have plastic shavings on the floor.

Through a rough Google search it looks like I can get a new beater bar for around $15-$20 or so.

However, should this be an excuse to upgrade? I've had this vacuum since 2006 and it's always done the job.

If I should upgrade, what do you recommend?

DYSON FTW, which reminds me i probably should clean the REUSABLE filter, had a cheap vacuum before, and they always seem to plug up, and it was like $20 or something stupid everytime it needed replaceing (seem like once a month or something; btw dog hair on carpet did not help it)

I bought a Miele Bolero elite about 2 months ago.

Best. Vacuum. EVER.

Seriously, this thing rocks. It's very expensive, which caused some hesitation, but I cannot rave enough about how well this thing cleans. I decided to make the investment because we just got a puppy, and I have dog and dust allergies, so I needed a good vacuum.

Not only does it clean extremely well, but it's very quiet and it is so easy to maneuver. I literally vacuum every other day to keep my allergies in check, and this machine is a joy to use. It also seems very well built and I think it will last a long time.

We have been looking for a new vacuum when ours dies or ends its useful life.

Doesn't consumer reports say that there's a kenmore or something that is much better and a bit cheaper also?

^ Hmm, that'd be nice to know. I'm thinking about going Dyson (DC 24 Animal), but if there is anything out there that is comparable and/or better and LESS than $450, that'd be nice.

Ew, just realized the DC24 line only has a 20 ft power cord. I'll have to see how long the one is on my current vacuum.

Hmm...talked to the fiancée and we're torn between the DC25 Animal (ball) (the DC24's beater bar is only 11 inches wide) or the DC28 Animal (non-ball).

Amazon.com has the DC25 as $499.99 and the DC28 as $469.00. The DC28 is rated higher for "suction", has a bigger canister, but it's 4 pounds heaver and doesn't have the "ball" technology.

I wonder if someplace like Best Buy would have similar floor models.... It'd be nice to get a feel for them.

SCRATCH THAT! Looks like the only difference between the "Animal" and non-Animal versions is an attachment...an attachment I already own.

Except for the DC28...that seems to be in a class of it's own. Oye.

We're gonna swing by Best Buy tonight and get a "feel" for them.

Sold Vacuums for 5 years at Sears. Dealing with Soccer and stay at home Mom's made certain I knew my material. Best vacuum hands down would be a Dyson. I've sold so many Dyson for different jobs it was laughable. One lady used hers to vacuum her barn, one used it as a shopvac (wood chips and bolts) and for pets, its a clear winner. 5 years and two German shepherds later, my Dyson is still going strong. If you don't purchase a Dyson, look into getting a Kenmore canister or their intuition uprights which are all made by LG and Panasonic.

My mother-in-law bought a Dyson Ball. We have a regular Dyson (forget which model). Her's is a lot lighter but doesn't seem as strong. Ours works great. I have a golden retriever so a good vacuum is necessary. I lucked out with mine. I bought it refurbished online a couple years ago for $150. Has been great with no issues. The only problem I had was it came with an attachment that didn't fit the hose. I called them and they said they did have two sizes as they changed the hose sizes at some point. They just sent me out the right one for free. Good company too.

I'll also +1 on the Dyson, take a 20% off for Bed, Bath and Beyond and get a killer deal. It's amazing.

Only problem i have had with my Dyson Animal (i have an old DC07) is i use the hose so much it tore. It wasnt a big issue to fix. Went to Dyson's site ordered a new one and 3 days later it worked again. Mine has fallen down the stairs, vacuumed a whole living room and bedroom sized area of drywall dust a few times and keeps going. If you have animals there is nothing better. I got mine to replace the Oreck when i had a husky.

I really like our dyson as well. I think it's a dc07?, one of the early yellow ones. I bought it cheap as a factory refurbished unit, and haven't had one problem in the 5-7? years we've owned it. That said, consumer reports rates some cheaper vacuums higher.

Electrolux, things are crazy expensive (1K range) but they work and last a whole long time! My parents still have their vaccuum and it's nearing on being close to 15 or so years old! They've gotten it serviced twice and it still cleans just as good as a dyson that a neighbor has.

EDIT: Apparently the brand split up into Aerus and Electrolux, so get the Aerus one!

Heard on the news tonight that Hoover has recalled 142,000 canister vacs, overheating and catching fire is what has been reported.

maybe expensive, but how many cheap vacuums would they have bought in that same time frame though? (and spent on those?)
(kinda a general question , not aimed at you though)

well, they vaccum probably twice a week, and some family friends usually vaccum about once a week as well. They have about the same size house and they've been through at least 1 vacuum every 2 years from wal-mart. So at 100 bucks a pop, that's about 700 dollars they've spent so far on vaccums that can't even match the suction of that 15 year old electrolux. That thing still performs as well as a dyson I used to have!

You can pick up a 2200 dollar Lux Guardian (EPIC 9000) on ebay for around 450 including a few accessories and the thing has a 20 year warranty on it! only downside is that it's a canister vac!

While my dog was alive i vacuumed probably on average 3-4 times a week. Being a Husky she had lots of hair. I still vacuum at least 2 times a week as we have a cat that im allergic to gust to minimize the dander and hair, especially now that we have a baby. My Dyson which is at least 7? years old now still sucks (in a good way lol) as good as the day i bought it.

so basically in all reality, you come out ahead with buying a quality vacuum (let alone all the miscellaneous bags and filters, they have probably bought for those cheapo vacuums)

btw some people prefer canister vacs; and i would not mind one for the stairs especially if it hand a longer hose, then the wand on the dyson; so i do not have to carry it up the stairs while trying to get them
but the upright does have it's advantage's though, especially when you are trying to get the center of like a room (let alone alot easier to carry/maneuver around on a regular basis)

For the same price -- assuming your house is already set for it --- consider a central vac. Then all you need to buy is the canister and hose. Those systems can be way more powerful (depending on the model you buy) and don't need to be emptied every time you vacuum.

I vacuum EVERY MORNING with our Kenmore upright, bagless because we have a shedding dog. Replacing filters so often becomes expensive. I think depending on if you have pets, how often and how much area you need to vacuum, will change what needs you should look for in a vacuum. If you're not doing much vacuuming, have mostly floors that you wash, and don't have pets, I wouldn't shell out $500 on a Dyson. Just my thoughts though...

Dysons are worth every penny, you replace nothing on them and they're lifetime vacuums!

i will say hard to stomach the price of a $500 vacuum at first, but as others have said they love it, and glad they spent the additional money on a higher quality vacuum

I had a central Vac built into a house a while back, it was a horrible idea to say the least. I don't know what happened, but every so often the stupid thing would loose suction because of dirt building up in the pipes along the walls. The guy who came out the first few times said that this is typical and why many don't go with them. I gave up with it and just got a regular one.

it's a good investment just like you would invest money into a good set of knifes. The improvement in what they do justifies it!

We also have a central vac, and I hate it. The original owners installed it, not us. It's one of the cheap ones and it has no suction whatsoever. I also can't freakin stand hauling that 25ft+ hose around from room to room, especially when it can't even reach some areas because it's too short! It also scuffs the walls around corners with some nice gray marks.

Several months ago when I was looking at vacuums, I went online to see if I could improve the central vac somehow. So I was going to get new attachments, and discovered that they recently changed the size of the wall outlets, so the new attachments won't hook up to our 10 year old outlets. Awesome. So the central vac's attachments are in a box in the basement and I make use of my new Miele 4-5 times per week. Love that thing....

I picked up the kenmore intuition 31811 from sears for $270 plus tax. The next comaprable dyson was $399. The dyson did not have a hard brush attachment, long cleaning wand nor a real long cord like this one. I vacuumed last night with our old one and went over it with this and there was a decent amount in there that my old one missed.
I would say this is well worth it so far.
