It is a coyote. We had a pack of them that were hanging around in those distant trees in the photo. That is where I dump my grass clippings and that kind of freaked me out. They normally can only be seen at night - and they howl and cry quite loudly. That pic was taken a few years ago and was an unusual sighting. The pack has not been seen this year so they must of decided to move on. We never let the kids stay out after dark so we felt safe. Supposedly they will not come after humans - but I would not trust them. I feel these are normal sightings when living on the edge of conservation / wetlands.

A few years ago I slept in the backyard with my two sons in a tent. My MIL was upset because she was sure the coyotes would attack us. No issues to report!

I usually get opossums, raccoons, skunks, deer, foxes, and occasionally a lost coyote.

Thank you Mr. Walsh :angryfire

I wouldn't worry about the coyotes attacking humans. Odd to even see them out. I'm pretty they only come around inhabited areas when they're really hungry and looking for cats and dogs to eat.

I can't remember the last time I've seen one in person but I hear them all the time.

I went hunting for them with a friend and they wouldn't come out of the woods, although they were about 30 feet from the bait. They obviously knew we were there or else they would've been all over it.

We have far too many trespassers around us, most of the white tail variety.

They decimate plants to the point where we hardly bother planting anything anymore (same for all our neighbors, too). Most recently, last week they ate every single flower off 2 potted mums on my front porch, plus they ripped out a couple pansies in the same pots.

I'd like to sit in my yard with a shotgun and take them all out.

A side of you I've never seen before, Luvly

They're a serious problem around here also...I see them every night and morning when I'm driving near my house. The problem is the hunting policies are messed up around here (and other places) and people aren't allowed to hunt as many as they need to to keep the population down

I got a little pissed off at them. There are just wayyyy too many around here. I was super annoyed last week when I saw the pansies out of the dirt just laying on the porch. Put it back in the dirt, then I came home from a business trip to Chicago 3 days later and saw every single flower bitten off both mums. I mean really....they have to come on my front porch?? WTF. Go forage in the woods. My yard is not a damn salad bar.

There is currently a similar situation up here, apparently there is a parasite that is killing the wolf and coyote population off and lately deer and rabbit populations have been going through the roof since there main predator's numbers are down. IIRC they've added a week to deer season.

I call him that because he's eaten two dogs already... Stupid neighbors for leaving their dog loose without a leash...

^ - We have started to get overrun by turkeys. Some of them are quite large too, I'm tempted to find one for Thursday
