tray ceiling painting?

What is the best way to paint a tray ceiling - where do you stop the wall color? Is different shades of the same color paint used to really show off the ceiling? Just don't want it to blend all together and not be noticed. Any pics or experience out there? Thanks.

For us the walls are builders cream and ceiling is white, so the verticals are cream and horizontals are white.
I am assuming tray ceiling means either dropped or recessed parts.
