Switching Tile Sizes

I was told not to have more than two different types of flooring join (or even close) together. I am tiling a hallway that goes along 3 bedrooms that will be carpeted and 2 bathrooms that will also be tiled. I was thinking of using the same type/pattern/color of tile, but just in a different size for the bathrooms. I have seen this done and thought it looked pretty good, but the wife thought it wouldn't look right.

There are two main reasons I was considering this:
1. The bathrooms are fairly small, so smaller (12" +/- vs 18" +/-) tiles would probably work better.
2. This allows me to do one bathroom as a "test" since it will be my first time tiling, without worrying about matching the layout for the hallway (which has to start in the kitchen).

Any thoughts on this?

bathrooms i would do 12 x 12 and other areas 16 x 16, i think you can use these together, but you will need some sort of divider like a little piece of marble or wood or something to split up the sizes in my opinion

I was thinking of 12 x 12 (+/-) for the bathrooms and 18 x 18 (+/-) for the halls and kitchen/dining area. The +/- is because it really depends on what size the tiles come in. I'm not sure about using a different stone at the join between sizes since I don't think that there will be a border around the whole area. Just a stip might look funny.

So, since no one else has commented, do I take that as this is a bad idea?

i'm considering it for our basement so I do not think it is a bad idea, although I have never tiled before and this is also my first try at it...I'm reading some books by black and decker now, so hopefully they will shine some light on this...stay tuned...

I think it would be fine.

Maybe you could just cut them so that you have a straight grout line under the door at the transition?

Tile isn't hard - you'll be fine.
